Food Service Program: Community Breakfast

Community Lunch Volunteers A team of volunteers assist staff to prepare and serve a nutritious breakfast including beverages using safe food handling practices. Breakfast service is Monday through Friday mornings from 8:00 am to 9:00 am and volunteers typically work 30 minutes before and after shift time. Volunteers must be able to stand for an extended period and lift dishes. Volunteers will need a valid food handler’s license or be willing to obtain one. Clean-up Crew A team is also needed to clean the area and wash dishes after completion of breakfast. Dining Room Prep One volunteer is needed each morning to prepare dining tables, place napkins in dispensers, refill salt and pepper shakers, and refill utensil containers. These volunteers will start about 7:30 am.

Representative Payee

Breakthrough - (formally Episcopal Social Services) is looking for volunteers to become Representative Payees for our clients who are not able to manage their monthly income without support because of mental illness or other reasons. Volunteers may work one-on-one with consumers on a regular basis to build relationships and to be a positive role model, or only work with bank statements. You don't have to have a financial background, and you’ll have guidance every step of the way. Basic computer and internet skills are required for this opportunity. Hours for these opportunities are Monday through Friday. If these times would be difficult, we do have opportunities for Internal Audits that has more flexibility to the hours. This is an ongoing volunteer opportunity and consistency of volunteers is needed to build trusting relationships with clients.

Notes for Hope

Flexible Schedule | Virtual Opportunity

Write notes of encouragement for our homeless for us to place in their breakfast sacks. It can also act as writing practice for children who are now doing school from home. Notes are one way to connect with persons whose thoughts are almost completely on survival during the day. Individuals arrive for breakfast at Breakthrough and in their breakfast bag, we insert an encouragement. The size of the Notes can be as small as a name tag, or as large as a notecard. They can be written, drawn, in color, or black/white. You can use colored paper, or not. Some people use cardstock, others just use copy paper. Some put multiple messages on one page, copy and cut them down to size. Notes can incorporate an inspirational message, a Bible verse, a quote, or name a resource in the community they might be able to find. Please keep track of your volunteer hours and send those to me along the way.
