Mission Statement

ASCNYC is a multiservice community organization that carries out its mission of "helping many, one by one" by building community, connection, and stability for New Yorkers living with and at risk for HIV/AIDS. ASC's comprehensive programs include state-of-the-art peer education and training, harm reduction, specialized women's services, HIV counseling and testing, mental health services, medical and holistic care, case management, support groups, and many other innovative programs that help New York City's most vulnerable individuals and families to survive and thrive in the face of HIV/AIDS.

Description

ASC is located in the Union Square area, with satellite sites in development in East Harlem and the Lower East Side. Our free, comprehensive services are offered in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole/French. ASC provides peer-delivered outreach, education, and skills training as well as HIV prevention and support services including HIV counseling/testing; harm reduction and recovery support; case management; housing placement assistance; support groups; Basic Needs assistance (food pantry, meals, clothing bank); and crisis intervention. ASC ensures our clients' expedited access to medical care and related HIV services via numerous bi-directional referral linkages.

The cornerstone program of the agency is our Peer Education & Capacity Skills Training Program, which since 1991 has provided skills training, paid internships, and job opportunities for active and recovering substance users, women, ex-offenders, and other at-risk, underserved subpopulations. Each year ASC sponsors 40-50 trained Peer Educators who serve as inspiring examples of the possibility of change in communities at risk. Armed with skills and information, these Peer Educators provide outreach services to high-risk shelters, SROs, and communities throughout the city. These services include engaging individuals on HIV prevention education, substance use, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and Hepatitis--plus support groups and other services.
