Northstar Tutoring’s mission is to help low-income and underserved K-12th grade students in the D.C. area reach their full potential by overcoming barriers to personal and academic success. By matching students with their own volunteer tutor/mentor we strive to provide the free academic support and personal attention that these students may not otherwise have. We are excited to be starting a new partnership with Center City Charter School’s Shaw location! Sessions will be held 3:45-4:45 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays (most volunteers sign up for one day a week, but are of course welcome to sign up for both!). Volunteers will work with the same student for the duration of the school year - unless a change is requested - and pairs will work on math and reading materials provided by Northstar Tutoring. In addition to tutoring sessions, volunteers are encouraged (but not required) to take their students on mentoring activities. These mentoring activities range from going to the movies or visiting a museum, to attending sporting events or meeting at a library for extra tutoring sessions. Students at this location range from Kindergarten to 8th grade and volunteers are encouraged to request a specific age range they are interested in being partnered with. Please note - we are also looking for volunteers to help with onsite management during tutoring. These volunteers will help Northstar staff with a number of tasks including signing in volunteers, bringing students to their assigned classrooms, helping to organize materials and supplies, and passing out snacks. Please let us know if you are interested in volunteering in this capacity! A few additional facts: We accept new students throughout the year so volunteers can sign up at any point and be matched with a new student. We usually ask that volunteers commit to the remainder of whatever school year they join in. No previous teaching experience is required (the majority of our volunteers have never taught/tutored before). Tutors who are unable to come on a weekly basis are welcome to volunteer as a sub to fill in for absent tutors! Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to participate. If you are interested please reach out to Saarah Abdul-Rauf at srauf@northstartutoring.org.
