During these uncertain times, how can we help?

At Northstar Tutoring, we’re fighting to make sure that every student has the chance at a better future. By matching low income students with their own volunteer tutor/mentor we strive to provide the academic support and personal attention that they may not otherwise have in their lives.
Pre-COVID we met with our students at the Hyattsville Teen Center (3911 Hamilton St., Hyattsville, MD 20781). Starting in March, 2020 we transitioned our normal tutoring and mentoring program to be completely online. Despite this change we are continuing our one-on-one model to match tutors with their own student for the full year (and subsequent years if both return). We are currently holding group Zoom sessions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-8:00 pm (volunteers typically sign up for one night a week but are of course welcome to do more!) where everyone signs in on one call and are then separated into private breakout rooms. During the 90-minute tutoring sessions, student-volunteer pairs work together to complete the student’s homework and/or study for upcoming tests.
Since we are continually accepting new students throughout the school year/summer we are always looking for new tutors to volunteer!
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Jennifer Townsend at JTownsend@northstartutoring.org.
