For more than 30 years, Northstar Tutoring’s mission has been to help low-income and underserved K-12th grade students in the D.C. area reach their full potential by overcoming barriers to personal and academic success. We achieve this by matching students with their own volunteer tutor/mentor who helps them once a week to complete their homework, study for upcoming tests/quizzes or work on supplemental education materials.

After transitioning in March, 2020 to only online sessions, we are now offering a hybrid model where volunteers and students can choose to either meet in person or virtually. Whether it is online or in person, volunteers still work on a one-on-one basis with their own student and pairs typically meet once a week for 60-90 minute sessions.

A few additional facts:

  • We accept new students throughout the year so volunteers can sign up at any point and be matched with a new student. We usually ask that volunteers commit to the remainder of whatever school year they join in.
  • No previous teaching experience is required (approximately 90% of volunteers have never taught/tutored before).
  • We work with students in grades K-12 and volunteers can request a specific age range to be matched with. Please note our Hyattsville location only takes in students in grades 4th-12th.
  • We have a significant group of students who attend bilingual schools or come from Spanish speaking families so Spanish speaking tutors are always in high demand!
  • Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to participate.
