VIVE Kitchen Volunteer VIVE has a significant need for volunteers to assist in meal prep and service in our kitchen at Vive Shelter for Lunch and Dinner. Duties: Food is healing! Residents at Vive go through long, difficult journeys to finally end up claiming asylum in Buffalo. When they arrive they need a moment to recharge, find safety, while being both figuratively & literally fed. Our kitchen volunteers ensure we share culturally relevant nourishment with the families staying at the shelter. Volunteers work with a resident-led team who help guide hospitality for their peers. Duties include working with a team of multi-lingual, multi-national residents to help prepare and serve meals. Who you'll work with: Vive's Kitchen Managers and Hospitality Team along with residents staying at Vive. Minimum time commitment: Once a week on an ongoing basis is ideal. 1-2 times a month works too! We serve 3 meals a day every day 365 days a year so there's always help to give. Requirements: Comfortable taking direction from the kitchen managers for safe meal prep. Masks worn at all times inside facility. Volunteers must be over the age of 18. People with the following skills/experience would be great here: Passionate about cooking. No need for previous experience cooking for large groups. Interest in sharing cultures with people different from you. Conversational fluency in a language other than English is great but not required. Duties: The Priscilla Project is an in-home visiting program in which volunteer mentors provide friendship/support to pregnant women throughout their pregnancy and postpartum period, while connecting women and their families with resources in the community. This can include assisting with WIC shopping/appointments, visiting donation centers, and accompanying the client to doctor's appointments/hospital visits. Who you'll work with: At-risk and socially isolated pregnant women in the Buffalo area Requirements: Female, at least 21 years old People with the following skills/experience would be great here: Experience in women's health/breastfeeding education/mentoring and familiarity with navigating the healthcare system and working in multicultural settings are helpful but not required.

Vive, a program of Jericho Road Community Health Center, has a 30-year legacy of providing safe refuge. Vive assists those who wish to make a refugee claim in Canada or who are seeking asylum protection in the United States, by providing safety, shelter, food, and legal help. Duties: Assist Vive residents who are moving out of the shelter and into apartments; pack furniture, luggage, and other belongings into vehicles (either personal vehicle or Jericho Road's van) and unload into apartment; help with basic set up of apartment Who you'll work with: Vive residents who are moving out of the shelter and into apartments, other Vive residents who are assisting families in their move-out, Vive staff Requirements : Preference is given to those who have a large van or truck that can be used for transporting furniture and belongings, but this is not required. Must be physically able to lift and move large pieces of furniture and boxes. People with the following skills/experience would be great here: Comfort working with people who speak languages other than English is helpful. Schedule: Flexible, though each Welcome Home project typically takes a full day

Duties: Greeting families when they arrive at the bus station. This includes meeting them warmly at the transit station, helping transport them to their new apartment, and providing a hot, culturally appropriate meal for their first night. Requirements: Completion of volunteer application and/or group liability form Ability to be a warm, welcoming presence for incoming clients Driving/transport capabilities Ability and willingness to prepare culturally a appropriate meal Attendance at a mandatory volunteer orientation and training prior to working with clients People with the following skills/experience would be great here: conversational proficiency in another language (especially Spanish, French, Haitian Creole, or Portuguese); people looking to build community within Buffalo; people interested in volunteering with their company, community organization, or religious institution.
