Newton County Drug Free Coalition is actively seeking high school youth and college young adults to participate in the community-wide planning group for drug/alcohol abuse prevention. The Coalition meets monthly to discuss how we can help our community raise awareness about the effects and impacts of substance misuse by youth and adults. The Coalition is made up of agencies and organizations who have a vested interest in the mental health and well being of the people they serve and citizens interested in seeing a reduction in drug/alcohol use and the accompanying high-risk behaviors that damage our community. The Coalition meets first Wednesday of the month from noon to 1:30 pm. If you can't make the current meeting schedule but would like to be involved in helping to prevent substance misuse, there are opportunities to be involved in campaigns throughout the year. Your love of math can make a huge difference in someone's life! Newton Reads has several adults almost ready to take their GED exam, BUT.....while they have sufficient reading and writing skills, they struggle with the math concepts required to pass the test. They need YOUR help to coach them to confidence in problem-solving. GED prep sessions are scheduled twice a week, at different locations around Newton County, in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Basic orientation to adult tutoring is provided, but successful tutors need just three qualities: be reliable, have respect for the adult who wishes to learn, and have the ability to build a relationship. Research has shown that one caring adult can make a real difference in a child's life just by visiting regularly. This is a school-based mentoring program: 1 hour. Once a week. For the duration of the school year. Mentor volunteers may tutor, connect students to strengthening resources, advocate for the student within the school structure, and sometimes are just there to listen and provide support. There is a particular need for male volunteers at this opportunity to mentor high school boys. Training is provided: background check required. IMPORTANT: Please include your phone number in addition to your email when inquiring about this opportunity so an organization representative can contact you directly.
