The Adult Education Department of the Cultural Development and Wellness Center is a subsidiary of Aurora Mental Health. WHAT an ADULT ESL VIRTUAL TUTOR DOES: Tutors offer enrolled students one more more one-hour, private tutoring sessions on Zoom. We do not currently have any in-person tutoring opportunities. Our students need the opportunity to practice English individually outside of class, so this offering is a huge support! WHAT WE WOULD NEED FROM YOU: In addition to conversing in English, volunteers might be asked to assist a student with a specific English need (pronunciation, reading, writing). Teachers can provide materials to support the tutor/student learning. High EQ, a clear, encouraging manner of engaging with students, and ideally, some understanding of trauma-informed care, are essential to this role. Although you don't need teaching experience to assist in this role, the role requires minimal lesson preparation depending on students' needs. COMMITMENT: All volunteers will be required to do some online training and observe other tutors. We ask that virtual volunteers commit to at least 13 weeks to start. Tutors choose regular time slots and maintain that schedule for the duration of our trimester (13 weeks of class time). Days, afternoons, evenings, and weekends are all in demand. These appointments are held over Zoom. DO NOT reply to this post on VolunteerMatch as it is not checked for responses. WHAT WE DO: We offer ESL, GED prep, and Citizenship classes to adult students from around the world. Students who have met residency requirements to apply for citizenship are highly advised to study to prepare for this intense and important interview that affords them the opportunities intrinsic to citizenship. The interview is conducted one-on-one in an office setting and is mostly conversational. Because of this, students benefit enormously from lots of practice with a tutor one-on-one to become accustomed to this format and the questions asked in this unique setting. WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU: Citizenship tutors would be asked to offer a minimum of one hour weekly to Zoom sessions with a student. Tutors would shadow existing tutors several times before they were in contact with a student due to the complex nature of this application. During your tutoring session, you would help the student work on the aspects of the application they most want help on, acting as the "agent." Citizenship Classroom Assistants would join online classes dedicated to studying for the citizenship interview. Teachers would prepare lessons that Citizenship Classroom Assistants would help implement. Classes are 9-11am and 6-8pm, both on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursday. You could assist in one or more classes per week for the duration/remainder of a 13 week trimester - and beyond, if you so choose. Citizenship volunteers MUST be sympathetic to supporting refugee and immigrant students in this vulnerable move toward a challenging goal. Emotional intelligence, a clear, encouraging manner of engaging with students, and ideally, some understanding of trauma informed care, is essential to this position. Volunteers WILL NOT assist in the completion of citizenship applications due to sensitive legal concerns.
