Alleviate the isolation experienced by an older individual who can no longer drive or who does not have the family/friends to visit with them. Spend some time talking, playing games, engaging the individual mentally and participating in any activity you are comfortable with. If you cannot drive yourself, or have reliable transportation, you can become a friendly caller from your home! This is a flexible check in call, that can really make a difference in someone's day. Volunteers are asked to spend at least an hour a week friendly visiting (or calling) with these participants.

Southern Rhode Island Volunteers (SRIV) is Seeking Meals on Wheels (MOW) Volunteers MOW drivers and substitute drivers are needed in the Washington County Area. This is a very flexible volunteer opportunity that may be perfect for retired or partially-retired seniors who want to give back to their community. Volunteers can commit to a weekly schedule or be on SRIV’s substitute call list in the event that a regular driver can’t fulfill their shift. MOW of Rhode Island is the only program of its size in the state that provides home-delivered meals to frail, elderly and disabled adults who without the program would be at risk for nutritionally deficient diets. Without volunteers MOW would not be available to local Washington County residents leaving many low-income or at-risk residents vulnerable and isolated. Deliveries take place Monday through Thursday with shifts starting between 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Drivers have between 4 to 10 stops to make depending on their route. There are currently five routes: Kingston, Peace Dale, South Kingstown, North Narragansett and South Narragansett available directly through Southern Rhode Island Volunteers. Requirements: Must have a valid driver’s license, good driving record and pass a required background check. SRIV volunteers are required to fill out a volunteer registrationn form and report their hours on a monthly basis.
