Individuals are needed to provide special event assistance and utilize individual talents and skills to create memorable experiences and activities for Como visitors. DUTIES: Depending on the event, v olunteers could help with things like: Facilitate event activities like games and crafts geared toward our youngest visitors Help at fundraising type events with things like registration check in, setup/take down, silent auctions, etc. Serve as a friendly, engaging ambassador of Como Park Zoo & Conservatory and assist Como visitors and event guests with general questions. RESPONSIBILITIES: Volunteers will: Follow established policies/procedures as reviewed during Como Orientation; Learn and share information about Como Park, its attractions, and visitor amenities; Willingly work with a variety of staff and other volunteers Work pre-arranged shift or give notice of absence QUALIFICATIONS: Volunteers must: Be at least 17 years of age or be enrolled in Como’s Nature Walk Youth Program; Be available to volunteer for various special events for a minimum of six months; Be friendly, welcoming and positive. Be able to initiate and engage interactions with visitors of all ages and cultures; Have the ability to stand for extended periods of time; and Consent to and pass a criminal background check pursuant to the Minnesota Child Protection Act. DUTIES: Provide friendly service to all visitors to Como Park Zoo and Conservatory grounds and facilities. Serve as the first point of contact as guests arrive to the zoo and conservatory and the last friendly face they see as they are leaving. Volunteers in this role will answer general questions, solicit the assistance of Visitor Services staff as needed, thank visitors for any donations and create a warm welcoming environment as people arrive. Shift times are approx. 3 hours: 9:45am-1pm, 12:45pm-4pm and April-end of September, we also have a 3:45pm-6pm shift.

PURPOSE: Volunteers will support the Como Campus Interpretive Program in enriching the visitor experience by creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere while sharing information about Como’s plants and animals. DUTIES: Volunteers will: Share connections between plants, animals, and humans through props, stories and hands-on activities. Promote the interests of animal and plant conservation and the importance of bio-diversity. Inform visitors about fascinating animal and plant adaptations that help them survive. Greet and assist visitors with general information about the facilities. Monitor visitor activities in the facilities’ buildings and on the grounds. Assist with program development, training, and evaluation as requested. RESPONSIBILITIES: Volunteers will: Practice good interpretive techniques, present accurate information and enrich the visitor experience Follow established policies and procedures as specified in the Como Volunteer Handbook . Be available for regular shifts or give advanced notification of absence. Stay informed about basic Como Park amenities and services, its attractions and special events. Fulfill all training requirements and seek on-going training. Volunteer weekly or, a minimum of every other week for at least six months. - Shift times 10-1:00 or 1-4:00pm;Como is open every day of the year. QUALIFICATIONS: Volunteers must: Be at least 17 years old. Be willing to commit to a minimum six month good faith commitment. Be willing to learn and keep current about Como Campus attractions, amenities and hours of business. Be willing to utilize a variety of informal teaching techniques with visitors. Refrain from self-promotion of personal philosophies which are not consistent with Como’s education messages. Be able to initiate conversation with visitors of all ages and cultures. Promote a supportive and respectful workplace for other volunteers and staff. Consent to and pass a background check pursuant to the Minnesota Child Protection Act. BENEFITS: Volunteers will: Learn about plants and animals and their impact on cultures and the environment. Gain valuable experience interacting and sharing knowledge with visitors. Receive regular mailings with zoo and conservatory information and volunteer updates. Receive a 10% discount at Garden Safari Gift Shop while actively volunteering.

Como Park Zoo and Conservatory welcomes 1.7 million visitors from around the world - the second biggest tourist attraction in Minnesota. The Como Park Zoo and Conservatory is open 365 days; 10am-6pm from April-September and 10am-4pm from October -March . Admission to both the Como Zoo and Marjorie McNeely Conservatory is always free and a voluntary donation is appreciated.
