A Hospice Patient Visit with your Certified Pet

VITAS invites friendly and well-behaved pets to join the Paw Pals SM program, in which animals and their humans learn how to visit patients at the end of their life. A registered VITAS Paw Pals SM visitor can offer comfort, bring back memories, encourage activity and provide unconditional love to VITAS patients. Your visits leave behind memories of you and your pet, and rekindle thoughts of other pets. Pet visits can sometimes reach a patient when no one else can. Our Paw Pals SM brightens the day for everyone when they visit. All kinds of pets are invited to join the VITAS Paw Pals Club. Assist a Hospice Caregiver with a Needed Break

VITAS Healthcare (r) is looking for kind and caring people to help terminally ill patients and their families - just by being there. Many of our patients live at home with family members or friends who rarely get the opportunity to leave the house because they are devoted to caring for their ill loved ones. Relief care (sitting with a patient while the caregiver takes a break) is one of our biggest volunteer needs. For caregivers to have the opportunity to run an errand, go see a movie, go to a doctor’s appointment or go on an outing can work wonders to renew their energy and better equip them for the responsibilities of care-giving. VITAS Volunteer orientation is provided free of charge to help you learn the skills required to be an outstanding hospice volunteer. Time and dates are ongoing and flexible. We are especially looking for volunteers who would be available during daytime, weekday hours but weekends or evenings are also helpful. A Memory Bear Stitched Creates a Forever Friend for a Hospice Loved-One

A Memory Bear, sewn by a volunteer with compassion and love, is a forever friend who can ease a hurting heart after the death of a VITAS hospice patient. Sewn from a patient’s favorite pair of jeans, sports jersey, dress, work uniform, or shirt, a Memory Bear can evoke the closeness of a loved one, bring a smile to someone in distress, or offer a sense of security to a child who feels alone after the loss of a parent or sibling. An Office Opportunity, Help Provide Hospice Clerical Duties

Administrative volunteers promote hospice care by helping perform clerical assignments in an office setting. These assignments can include helping process mail outs, filing, data entry, answering phones, restocking supplies, making packets, plus many other tasks. VITAS Volunteer orientation is provided free of charge to help you learn the skills required to be an outstanding Office Volunteer. Volunteers are needed between the hours of 8am and 5pm, Monday through Friday.

Support a Bereaved Family

VITAS Bereavement volunteers make a real difference in the emotional and spiritual stability of our patients’ families. Trained bereavement volunteers may be assigned families to call or visit, asked to help organize community support groups and memorial services, or do bereavement mailings; all with the support and guidance of the VITAS bereavement team. VITAS Volunteer orientation is provided free of charge to help you learn the skills required to be a hospice volunteer. Additional training is provided about the stages of grief, how to communicate and encourage the bereaved, and how to recognize complicated grief. Volunteers work with the support of VITAS’ manager of volunteers, bereavement manager and/or chaplain to provide a caring presence to a grieving individual. Time and dates are ongoing and flexible. Denise I'd like to thank you for all the help you've given me, assisting and teaching me new things while I volunteered there at VITAS Hospice to giving me letters of recommendations for nursing programs and scholarships. VITAS helped me create my goal to maybe work in hospice care in the future. I'll be attending UCLA and its nursing program for the fall & I'm very excited! I'm really grateful for all of your help!
