October is a busy month when our horticulturists are planning for spring, as they have thousands of tulip bulbs to plant and leaves to rake. Additional volunteers in October will help our staff accomplish these big projects before it gets too cold (we hope!). Tools and instructions are provided, no previous gardening experience is needed. Volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. We recommend wearing layers as the temperatures can change during the day. Bring gardening gloves if you have them, otherwise volunteers can borrow some. Volunteers can work in light rain if they are comfortable doing so, but shifts are cancelled for heavy rain or thunderstorms. Volunteers will be notified if a shift is cancelled due to weather.

Volunteers must be able to stand for long periods of time, reach and bend, get on a step ladder. Gloves are recommended for both warmth and for protection against branches. All other tools will be provided. Volunteers will work in pairs. Holiday light stringing takes place mostly in October on Wednesday mornings, 10am-1pm, and Thursday afternoons, 1-4pm.
