Since 1923, Commonwealth Catholic Charities (CCC) has provided life-changing human services to vulnerable individuals and families throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. CCC offers quality and compassionate human services to all people, especially the most vulnerable, regardless of faith. Since 2010, CCC has provided comprehensive resettlement and immigration services to refugee newcomers in the Greater Richmond, Roanoke, and Newport News regions. The VISTA will provide vital support to the program in Newport News: helping improve quality and communication of events, and update resources and programming by bringing data, research, and feedback into the department; engaging the community, nonprofits and social service providers through outreach and education; and refining methods of garnering and utilizing resources. This project will require the VISTA to be able to research, assess, evaluate, and draft proposals on findings and recommendations. The VISTA will utilize a basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. This position is ideal for a VISTA that can demonstrate competence in communicating and interacting with others of diverse cultural, geographic, and economic backgrounds in a professional and compassionate manner. This VISTA position is in Newport News Virginia, a community filled with rich history and a plethora of recreational opportunities. Newport News offers easy access to the Chesapeake Bay, the Atlantic ocean, and multiple rivers, all within 30 miles. Housing still remains affordable but the city is predominantly car-centric. This VISTA position is a part of Catholic Charities USA’s Family Strengthening Program, a national intermediary project. As a member, you will meet virtually with VISTA Leaders and other VISTAs serving throughout the country, all focused on alleviating poverty. Member Duties : The VISTA will enhance CCC’s ability to guide newcomers in their journey of leading prosperous lives. The VISTA will develop and maintain a Community Sponsorship program to increase the number of refugee families receiving supplemental resettlement support through private sponsorship. The VISTA will develop and administer evaluation and feedback mechanisms to stakeholders (clients, staff and community) in the form of surveys, polls, focus groups and social events. The Vista will improve the quality of refugee services and events through professionalizing volunteer and donation management, with a focus on motivating previously resettled refugees to participate and contribute to the present resettlement services. The member will conduct regular outreach and attend community events to explore sources of volunteers and donations, then design volunteer opportunities to bring to the community and utilize CCC online systems and technology to track and monitor incoming donations.

CCC has opportunities for adults 18 years and older to interact with and help newly arrived refugees. Volunteers are needed in the classroom as teachers and helpers and tutors. Mentors will communicate weekly with their student using a choice of methods that might include email, in person, phone, Zoom or facetime. The mentor will serve as a liaison and friend to the student and provide academic support, research and exploration of education or career goals. Mentors will encourage students to learn about and get involved in their community.
