Goodwill of Southwestern PA is looking for individuals who enjoy helping others to make an impact in the adult learning community by assisting instructors in the ONLINE classroom. We are mainly looking for volunteers who can work with students on basic math up to algebra, with direction provided by the classroom teacher. We sometimes need volunteers to help students with reading/writing skills, and high school science/social studies topics as well. Our students are working to take the GED tests to obtain their High School Equivalency diplomas. Classes are morning, afternoon, and evening - choose a time that works for you! Volunteers must have, or be working towards, a bachelor’s degree in any field, and a desire to help adult students achieve their educational goals! An interest in the subject matter is always a plus!

Goodwill of Southwestern PA and partner organization Literacy Pittsburgh are looking for individuals who enjoy helping others to make an impact in the immigrant community by tutoring an adult immigrant (or small group of adult immigrants) in English language skills. There are many recently arrived refugees from Ukraine as well as from Afghanistan who need English tutoring. Having experience learning another language or having teaching experience is very helpful, but not required. Goodwill and Literacy Pgh are partner organizations that offer English as a Second Language classes; however, Literacy Pittsburgh also offers one-on-one tutoring. Goodwill occasionally gets new students who we cannot serve because of the time of day when they need class or because they have a rotating work schedule, making it hard to attend a group class that meets on the same days and times every week. After meeting with Goodwill to discuss possible student matches, you would be transferred to Literacy Pittsburgh for their Tutor Training, which consists of two separate meetings: one about teaching adults, and the other about teaching English to adult immigrants. You'll receive a training calendar and can choose dates that work for you. Upon completion of training, you'll receive books and materials selected for your specific student or small group based on their goals, needs, and level of English. You'll meet with your student or group 2x weekly, for about 3-4 hours per week. Time off during vacations and holidays is, of course, acceptable. The agency does ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months as it does take some time to help an ADULT student make progress with a new language. Tutoring could be in-person or online, depending on what you and the student wish to do. Volunteers should have, or be working toward, a bachelor’s degree in any field, and a desire to help adult students achieve their educational goals! An interest in the subject matter is always a plus! Those i nterested can contact Trisha Powell, Education Volunteer Recruiter by text at 412-498-0412 or by email at trisha.powell@goodwillswpa.org

Goodwill of Southwestern PA is looking for individuals who enjoy helping others to make an impact in the adult learning community by helping an adult immigrant/refugee student learn basic literacy skills in English. In our program, we have a few students requesting services who have a good conversational ability in English, but are unable to read in English (and possibly have very low literacy in their first language). This is clearly a big challenge, and we know that not everyone will be up for this task or feel equipped to help. Having a background in English as a Second or Other Language teaching could help but isn't required. Having a background as a K-12 reading instructor could certainly help, though not required. If you're interested, but do not have teaching experience, please still feel free to reach out. We would appreciate a six-month commitment of meeting the student 2x per week for 1.5 hours each meeting. You'll go through a training that's partially online and there are in-person options for the training as well. After training, materials will be provided, and a trained teacher will work with you in the first weeks to go through materials and have some trial sessions with the student. You'll receive support throughout your time as a reading tutor. Familiarity with Zoom, including knowing how to share a document on screen and draw/use laser pointer is very helpful. We are willing to teach someone who needs to brush up on these Zoom skills, however :) One of the students needs to meet at 5pm or later. Online is ok. In person in the Crafton neighborhood is also welcomed for that student. The other student lives on the North Side and could meet in person or online. He has varying availability during the day and early evening. Volunteers must have, or be working towards, a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in any field, and a desire to help adult students achieve their educational goals!

Goodwill of Southwestern PA is looking for individuals who enjoy helping others to make an impact in the adult learning community by assisting instructors in the ONLINE classroom. Hi there! We have a student who needs a volunteer tutor to work with her on reading and math skills to be able to pass GED exams. She has tried to be in group setting GED classes online for over a year, and she struggles a lot. It would be better for her to meet with someone one on one. She prefers online. If you have experience teaching basic reading and or basic math skills, please reach out and we can talk more! If you don't have experience with this, but are comfortable teaching someone these basic skills and believe you have the patience to work with an adult learner who struggles with these skills, please reach out. To help this student, you'd first meet with me briefly on Zoom to go over details, and you'd attend a Tutor Training through Literacy Pittsburgh, our partner organization. If you've happened to already attend their training in the past, you should not need to repeat it. You'd receive books and materials for her level and goals, and you'd arrange meetings with her online. If needed, you could get coaching from teachers who've worked with her before and know what she needs the most help with. Six-month commitment minimum please. In all honesty, it will take this student more than 6 months to reach her goal, but a tutor who can help for at least six months will be able to make some progress with her. Tutors often take time off here and there for trips they take, vacation, holidays, etc, but overall 3-4 hours per week on average is required. Thank you for considering this opportunity! Goodwill of Southwestern PA is looking for individuals who enjoy helping others to make an impact in the adult learning community by assisting our adult ESL (English as a Second Language) instructors in Zoom classes. Our main needs are Tues/Thurs 10:00AM to 12:00PM and 4:00 to 6:00PM EST. You would first talk with the teacher, observe 1-2 classes, and then work with me, the Volunteer Coordinator (also former ESL teacher here!) to co-teach a small group and get comfortable. You'd receive lesson plans and the worksheets that you would share on screen. Must have familiarity with Zoom and be willing to learn Zoom annotation, screen sharing, breakout rooms, etc. (It's not that hard! I can help you!) Volunteers ideally have, or are working toward, a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in any field, and a desire to help adult students achieve their educational goals!
