Interested in helping with people with challenges learn to ride? Join our vibrant volunteer community on a beautiful horse farm! Windrush Farm is a therapeutic riding center helping people with all kinds of challenges in their lives. Our mission is to promote confidence, independence and well-being in children and adults with physical, cognitive or emotional challenges through therapeutic riding and horse related programs . We primarily need help in classes (opportunity description below), but also need help with grounds work, trail clearing, fundraising and to fill in for absent barn volunteers. Side walkers assist our riders during their lesson, everything from helping them physically stay on the horse to giving them encouragement and emotional support. They focus on the rider and create enduring relationships with them! Horse handlers MUST have experience working with horses. HHs are responsible for bringing our horses down to the arena, then leading and managing the horse during the lesson. Horse handlers will need to learn our horsemanship techniques to keep handling skills consistent for our horses. The minimum age for volunteering is 14. Volunteers must live or be staying at a local address. Volunteers must be able to keep up with a horse at a walk and a trot. We typically need volunteers in 1 hour classes Monday through Friday between 8:30- 6:00pm. If you can't commit to a regular time each week, we always need subs! Please email us at volunteer@windrushfarm.org. Thank you for considering us as your volunteer opportunity! https://www.windrushfarm.org/

We run two summer programs, Pony Pals and Giddy Up and Grow. Giddy Up and Grow is for therapeutic riders, primarily at risk youth. With the help of a volunteer, the participants ride and do other activities around the farm and nature trails, as well as work on reading and journaling as a part of every day. Pony Pals is integrated, having both recreational and therapuetic participants, Each rider in Pony Pals is assigned a horse and a volunteer for the whole week, learning to ride and about horse care in a fun, social, enviroment. in the afternoons they do a variety of activities & art projects, all horse related. There are 8 one week sessions, volunteers can sign up for one week or multiple weeks - even the whole summer! Volunteers will lead the horses during lessons, help the students learn to groom and tack, and assist with afternoon activities such as giving the horses baths, doing horse related games and art projects, reading, journaling, working in the garden and more! Volunteers MUST have experience working with horses, and be at least 14. We have orientation and training for all our volunteers, and evaluate their skill level before they work with clients. Ideally we would like to have the same volunteer with the same student for a whole week, 8:00 to 2:00, and then stay to help in the barn from 2:00 to 4:00. We are willing to discuss alternative schedules. Reach out to our Volunteer Coordinators, Caron and Tammy, at Volunteer@windrushfarm.org for more information.
