Disability Companions are caring adults 18+ who volunteer to visit and provide companionship and friendship to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who live independently in HeartShare's supported apartments. These apartments are located in communities in Brooklyn and Queens. Volunteers will be matched with an individual with disabilities who lives independently or with a roommate, and will provide friendship and companionship, that will help ease the loneliness and enrich the lives of the individuals we support. You can share activities such as walking around the neighborhood, assisting with light food shopping, crocheting or knitting, discussing current events, playing games or puzzles together, and cooking a meal together. You will not be asked to perform household tasks or provide personal care. You can choose when you would like to visit, as long as your companion will be available during that time. We ask that you make a commitment to visit your partner a minimum of 2 times per month, and that you make a minimal commitment of 1 year, that will ideally grow into a longer and even lifelong relationship. This will be a rewarding experience that will enrich the lives of the people we support, as well as bridge the gap between people with disabilities and their communities.
