Want a fun and novel place to volunteer with your group? Volunteer at the B&O Railroad Museum! The Museum is the birthplace of American Railroading and home to hundreds of historic rolling stock and railroading artifacts. The Museum is also a National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom site. We welcome groups of up to 20, from community organizations, businesses, sororities/fraternities, places of worship, and more. Group volunteer projects are a 1-time shift of 2-4 hrs (depending on the project) and are typically scheduled between 9:30 and 3:30 M-F. Group Project participants should be 18+. Groups with minors (14+ required) should email the volunteer coordinator - hold harmless forms may be required as well as adult supervision. Current projects we are looking for help on are: Helping us properly package and move a portion of our historic archives collection into storage. Much of our collection is currently stored in the basement of a large historic building that will be undergoing significant restoration as part of the 200 year anniversary of American railroading, with construction starting soon. This opportunity allows for some fun behind-the-scenes access! This opportunity does require light lifting, bending, walking (the Museum campus is large), and being on your feet for extended periods. PLEASE NOTE: This opportunity is for groups looking for a place to volunteer (corporate, student groups, scouts, church groups, etc). If you are looking for a place to volunteer as an individual, please see our other volunteer opportunities. Group service projects are often subject to the weather. In the event of rain, it may be necessary to reschedule depending on the project planned.

The B&O Railroad Museum is the birthplace of American Railroading, we tell the story of the industrial, economic, and cultural impact the railroads had on the city, the nation, and the world. Additionally, our museum strives to be a central resource for the community to find support and thrive in a 21 st century landscape: through workforce development programs, educational outreach and programs, historical preservation, and events. We are eager to find like-minded individuals who share the same passion for history or civic involvement and want to commit to preserving the story of American Railroading and the B&O! Our Rail Operations team focus on maintaining the first mile commercial railroad made in the United States, in addition to support our Train Rides for patrons. Training for all equipment, safety procedures, and rail work will be provided. Volunteers with experience in landscaping is a plus, but not required. Volunteers assist in every department of the B&O Railroad Museum. Most volunteers commit to one shift per week. While we encourage and prefer a weekly commitment, the minimum requirement to volunteer for most roles is one 6-hour shift per month for a year.
