TRU Community Care is a We Honor Veterans Level 5 Partner with the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. This means we desire to provide Veterans on our service with Veteran-Specific Care. A Veteran volunteer often has a unique way of connecting with a Veteran patient. Sometimes as patients approach end-of-life it is especially important that they are companioned by someone who, "gets it". This doesn't mean your companionship is always focused on the patient's military experience. But the shared experience of serving in the military lends itself to trust and connection that is such a gift to our patients. When desired, we provide patients on our service with a military recognition ceremony. This is often just the patient and a few loved ones as well as our Veteran volunteer. We have a few pins and a star from a retired American flag that we give the patient in honor of their service. Please consider volunteering with our Veteran patients. Your service is truly needed. No experience working with hospice and palliative patients is required, just a compassionate and teachable heart. A thorough and interesting training is provided. Once trained, volunteers will have access to opportunities and choose the patient assignment that works best for them.

Make an important difference by sharing your time with a patient receiving hospice or palliative care. Provide an hour/week for companionship with a patient where they live: a residential home, an apartment or a room at an assisted living or memory care facility. OR Share 2-4hrs/ week to provide respite for a hospice patient's primary caregiver (their partner, son, daughter, friend) so they have a peace of mind, knowing their loved one has company. Respite enables caregivers the ability to leave their home for an appointment, to run errands or to take a break. Your support helps the caregivers reset and offer better care to their loved ones. You companion the hospice patient while their caregiver is gone but are not responsible or permitted to provide personal care. No experience working with hospice and palliative patients is required, just a compassionate and teachable heart. A thorough and interesting training is provided. Once trained, volunteers will have access to opportunities and choose the patient assignment that works best for them. A one year commitment is requested.
