This is a great opportunity for those who may want to help their community but do not want or are not able to lift or stand for long periods of time. In this position, volunteers will assist departments at Lutheran Social Services as needs arise, with tasks such as data entry, copying, filing, shredding, and phone calls. Bilingual speakers are also needed to help call and check in on clients. Volunteers can choose the days and times they serve, but shift will need to take place during normal office hours, Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm. This position will require a background check as you may be asked to handle sensitive information.

The Refugee Youth Mentorship Program (RYMP) purpose is to foster a sense of self, establish a deeper connection to the Tucson community, and support youth on their quest to become capable, independent and well-rounded adults. We are looking for mentors for our summer cohort, with training to begin the last week of May and running to the first week of June. This program matches mentors with refugees 15-24 years old within their first 5 years of resettlement. Together you work towards the mentee's goals, related to vocational advancement, educational success, or community participation. Mentorship enriches the lives of both the mentee and mentor. We offer 1-on-1 and small group mentorship models. To ensure that the program requirements are being upheld below are the commitments that the mentor must agree to before being enrolled in the program and matched with a mentee. Attend an on-site mentor training and program kickoff event (where I will be matched with my mentee). I agree to obtain a fingerprint clearance card . I agree to work with my mentee to set a SMART goal that he/she can achieve in 4 months. I agree to meet with my mentee for 4-5 hours a month, for a minimum of 4 months. Volunteers in the Mesa area are needed to help with packing and distributing monthly food boxes to community members in need. This opportunity can be great for groups looking to volunteer together. As a volunteer you will distribute donated food boxes to community members in need onsite. Shifts occur on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:00am to 11:15am (closed 2nd Tuesday of the month). Packing food boxes will take place at First Evangelical Lutheran Church. This is a simple easy way to make a positive impact on your community!

Virtual Opportunity
In this position, volunteers are needed to purchase individually packaged snacks and build personalized snack packs using Ziploc gallon sized bags for asylum seekers who are newly arrived in the United States. Snack bags can be made anywhere! (your home, church etc) and dropped off at either our Phoenix or Tucson offices. Snacks could include any variety of snacks such as: -beef jerky -single serving tuna or chicken packets -cheese crackers, nuts, raisins, granola bars. -Gatorade/water bottles (If you include Gatorade or bottled water, please bring a case or two (instead of including water inside the snack packs). Feel free to include encouraging notes in Spanish or English inside the snack packs. Asylum seekers are currently coming to Arizona from all over the world - This is a great opportunity to help their first few hours more comfortable, with something healthy to eat and drink.

Are you wanting to help refugees learn English as they acclimate to the United States? Volunteers are needed in the Mesa and Phoenix area to teach English reading and writing to newly resettled refugees. Have simple, natural conversation practice with refugees who are learning the language and help them to feel more comfortable with basic dialogue, practice useful phrases and words, and help them memorize key vocabulary they’ll need in everyday life. As a volunteer you will be matched to a refugee in your community. Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest does not have a specific curriculum you will be asked to follow. Shifts will occur inside refugee's homes or the community. Help your community by using your own experiences and knowledge.
