Activities: Volunteer Greeters share their favorite neighborhoods and sites in New York City with visitors from around the world. Greeters are not tour guides - they are New Yorkers sharing their love for the city. Benefits: Make new friends from all over the world . Show off the neighborhoods you know and love. If you speak a foreign language, here is your chance to practice it with native speakers. You will be able to promote a friendly, inviting and accessible image of New York City. We are seeking volunteers to join our amazing corps of savvy New Yorkers who unveil the magic of our city to visitors. Foreign Language Speakers are currently a high priority for Big Apple Greeter. Mission: To enhance the worldwide image of New York City and enrich the New York experience by connecting visitors with knowledgeable and enthusiastic volunteers. Activities: Volunteers walk visitors throughout neighborhoods of New York City that they know well in all five boroughs. Visitors are able to experience the various sights and sounds with the greeter and can get a real taste of New York City and its inhabitants. Many of our greeters are senior citizens who have had long experience of the neighborhoods they show. Visits may include from one to six people. Qualifications: Greeters must enjoy meeting and talking with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. They must be familiar with and upbeat about the neighborhoods that they want to show. Foreign language skills are a plus, especially ASL and Spanish. It is essential that volunteers be comfortable using public transportation since it is the easiest way to get around New York City and we feel it helps make each visit to New York City even more like a slice of the daily life of a New Yorker. While just about anyone who fits the qualifications can be a greeter, this is an ideal activity for senior citizens, retired or otherwise, who are outgoing and enjoy sharing their knowledge of the city with people from other places. Time Commitment: Greeters show New York City 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Each greeter must commit to a minimum of 1-3 visits per month, 4 hours per visit. Benefits: There is a thrill in making new friends from all over the world and sharing the rewards of cross-cultural exchange . If you speak a foreign language, here is your chance to practice it with native speakers. As a greeter you will be able to show off the neighborhoods you know and love while helping to support the local businesses that help make your favorite neighborhoods so wonderful. You will be able to promote a friendly, inviting and accessible image of New York City.

Big Apple Greeter connects visitors to New York City with local volunteers (Greeters) for a free, four-hour excursion ("Greet"). Greeters are not tour guides but New Yorkers who make their guests feel welcome as they visit NYC neighborhoods. For Greeter/Visitor experiences to be successful, it’s essential that the logistics of the "Greet" go smoothly. The Coordinator of Volunteer and Visitor Services plays a big role in ensuring that this happens. This position is onsite. 10 to 12 hours over 2 days per week. Monday is required. The other day is flexible and may include other work or projects that fall outside the Coordinator job description. Responsibilities: Get to know our Greeters via phone to match them with visitors. Expand our Greeter database with relevant information about them and their knowledge of NYC. Match Greeters with visitors based on the Greeters’ areas of knowledge and the visitors’ interests. Enter information such as date, time, and place about a scheduled Greet into our proprietary database (training will be provided). Send confirmation emails to both visitors and Greeters regarding the logistics of the Greet. Reach out to visitors and Greeters via phone, text, WhatsApp, or email if they do not reply to confirmation emails. Troubleshoot scheduling problems such as cancellations and changes to Greets, including trying to find a replacement Greeter should the scheduled Greeter become unavailable. Other related tasks as needed. Qualifications: Very comfortable speaking with people over the phone. This will include our Greeters and NYC visitors, some of whom may be from another country. Friendly, articulate, and patient, with a genuine desire to keep our Greeters happy and visitors satisfied with their Greet. Detail-oriented, multi-tasker, and fast learner. Basic computer skills on PC platform (knowledge of MS Word and Excel a plus) Able to learn new software. Training in our unique database software will be provided. Must be willing to work onsite in our office. Can make a minimum of an 8-month commitment, with a preference for those who can commit for one year or longer.
