General Description: Volunteer tutors assist adult learners with literacy, numeracy, English language skills, digital literacy, or citizenship in a supportive environment. Tutors encourage and support students by helping them develop confidence and a positive attitude about education. DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Meet with student(s) weekly for 1:1 or small group tutoring sessions for 1 - 2 hours per week for a minimum of six months Engage students in the decision-making process of developing an education plan and setting goals Plan and design lessons and activities that support the students’ educational goals. Review and select appropriate instructional materials that reflect the students’ interests and levels Maintain a positive and encouraging learning environment that acknowledges and celebrates the students’ progress Complete and submit required paperwork, including attendance records, goal sheets, and student progress reports, in a timely manner Maintain professional boundaries with students Refer students to other HECC services, as needed, in consultation with the Adult Education Manager Stay informed about Adult Education programming through the newsletter and other communications and participate in professional development activities of interest Maintain in regular communication with the Volunteer Tutor Coordinator regarding your tutoring match Respond to emails and phone calls in a timely manner Honor student confidentiality QUALIFICATIONS: To perform the volunteer tutor responsibilities, an individual must: be at least 18 years of age complete a 12-hour tutor training, a HECC orientation and 2 hour classroom observation be able to relate to individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds have good listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills be dependable, prompt, flexible and patient

General Description: Food Pantry Volunteer Team members work with HECC staff to receive and sort food donations and prepare food packages for distribution to clients. Volunteer team members help keep the Food Pantry well-organized and operating efficiently. Time Commitment: Must be able to keep a consistent schedule and have availability during at least one of the time slots listed below. Mondays: 12:00pm - 4:30pm Wednesdays: 8:00am - 12:30pm Fridays: 8:00am - 12:00pm* *Note: Individuals who desire to volunteer during the Friday shift need to be able to lift 50lbs as they will be unloading the truck. We also deliver food to seniors the second Tuesday of the month in the morning. Duties/Responsibilities: - Unload deliveries from Greater Chicago Area Food Depository Truck and other Pantry partners - Sort and clean fresh products - Sort, stock, and rotate food shelves - Date food products - Dispose of expired food - Reorganize food and supplies, as needed - Clean and disinfect shelves and floor - Break down cardboard boxes for weekly recycling - Prepare food bags for distribution - Assist in distribution of food to clients - Assist with paperwork, as assigned Qualifications: - Youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. - Ability to lift boxed food items (10 - 50 lbs.) - Able to work as part of a volunteer team - Flexibility and ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment - Positive attitude - Able to keep to consistent schedule Volunteers must be vaccinated and wear a mask while in the building.

Position: Howard Area Reading Program (HARP) Volunteer Department: Youth Development Services Location: Oakton Elementary School in southeast Evanston 436 Ridge Ave, Evanston, IL 60202 Reports to: Barbra Kaufman and Beth Liebman General Description: HARP is one of the longest-running literacy programs in the country-serving children for over 40 years! We proudly serve students in the Greater Rogers Park Area and Evanston. Volunteer mentors work one-on-one with one student throughout the duration of the program. Students are in second through fourth grade. HARP Volunteers mentor and tutor children to develop literacy skills and build confidence in themselves and their academic ability. HARP Reading Specialists train new volunteers, and all lesson plans and materials will be provided, and tutoring is always supervised by our program coordinator who will be able to provide support as needed. Time Commitment: One or two days a week between Monday and Thursday 3:00pm5:00pm October through mid-May (Training scheduled for September). DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: ● Tutor and mentor one student once a week to develop literacy skills and build academic confidence. ● Attend all trainings as assigned by our program manager. ● Utilize curriculum and materials as assigned by our program manager. QUALIFICATIONS: ● Must be at least 18 years of age ● Able to keep to a consistent schedule and be available from October through May ● Interest in working with eager struggling readers ● Willingness to follow lesson plans ● Good sense of humor!
