Howard Area Community Center Social Media Intern Opening Organization Description Howard Area Community Center is a local nonprofit organization in the Roger’s Park neighborhood of Chicago. We provide the tools and resources to empower individuals, enabling their independence, and offering a better chance for a brighter tomorrow. We are focused on building community success through the work of our programs, our staff and our dedicated volunteers. Howard Area Community Center’s mission is to assist low-income individuals and families in the greater Rogers Park and adjacent communities to stabilize their lives and to develop the social skills necessary to become effective community members. In order to accomplish this mission, the agency’s programs provide emergency intervention, family stabilization, and promote developmental growth. Social Media Intern Role The role of Volunteer Intern will be to work with staff and other volunteers to spread HACC’s mission, build community relationships, and grow HACC’s supporter and donor base. This will be achieved through developing and spreading promotional content that will resonate with younger generations to participate and join various HACC events, become donors, and encourage volunteer support. Position Assignments In this position, the Social Media Intern will: Update HACC’s social media pages with material from the Communication Coordinator. Create graphics following HACC brand guidelines. Create video content (IG Reels and Stories) to be shared on social media platforms Research local organizations in the area and connect with them through social media in order to promote HACC’s programs and opportunities. Assist departments with promoting their individual programs throughout the local area, which may include distributing flyers, sending emails, or creating materials to be posted on different platforms. Assist with the promotion of different events and activities within HACC’s different departments, both online and in the community. Assist in updating HACC’s website under the direction of the Communication Coordinator. Hours per week: 5-10. Hours will be set with the Communication Coordinator before starting. Length of internship: 3 months with the opportunity to extend. Beginning and end date: Fall 2022- Winter 2022. Portfolio of work: Please create a portfolio of your work including graphics, blogs, creative content etc. to demonstrate your skills, which can be applied to your university course. You will also complete a written evaluation of your internship when finishing. HACC will also validate your portfolio and write an evaluation once completed. Facilities Volunteer Position Description Facilities Volunteer Duties: Facilities Volunteers will assist the Building Manager and Classroom teachers. Specific tasks and activities include: Support Classroom laundry schedule Clean windows, doors and glass in all areas (inside and outside if the weather permits) Wash, disinfect and organize toys in common areas Dusting and cleaning ceiling, air conditioning vents, lamps and walls Clean exterior areas (including the south and north play yards) Cleaning and disinfecting garbage bins in classrooms and common areas Paint indoor and outdoor walls (if the weather permits) Organize closets Other tasks as assigned. Required Qualifications: Commitment to the mission and values of Howard Area Family Center and enthusiasm for working with children. No prior childcare experience is required. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with HAFC staff, parents and children. Ability to lift items (10-30lbs) Must be at least 16 years of age Reporting: All classroom volunteers will report to the Building Manager. Department: Adult Education Location: Howard Area Community Center Reports to: Volunteer Literacy Program Coordinator General Description: The volunteer works with individuals who need assistance navigating technology. This could include using Google, Gmail, Zoom, the Internet, and more. The volunteer may also assist the student in developing their computer skills, such as typing and using a laptop or desktop computer. Time Commitment: Volunteers are asked to make a 6 month commitment to the volunteer position. DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: ● Work with an individual student or a small group of students on a weekly basis on developing their technology skills. ● Find out the specific needs of their student in order to help them use technology to help them in their education or employment. ● Volunteers will complete 12 hours of Tutor Training through Literacy Works (currently completed online). QUALIFICATIONS: ● A minimum of a High School Diploma of GED is required. ● Good listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. ● Confident technology skills. ● Be able to relate to individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds. ● To be able to honor student confidentiality. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Volunteer tutors assist students with reading and writing, numeracy, English language acquisition, and/or computer literacy skills in a supportive environment. Both one-on-one and small group tutoring opportunities are available. Volunteer tutors are instrumental in encouraging and supporting the adult learner by helping them develop confidence and a positive attitude about education. Tutors receive regular staff support, have access to a vast library of instructional materials, and join an active learning community of educators and volunteers for ongoing professional development. Scheduling is flexible. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Attend a 1 and ½ hour orientation, complete a class observation and participate in a 12-hour tutor training. Meet with student(s) weekly in a public, neutral location (preferably HACC or a public library) for 1.5-2 hours per week for a minimum of six months. Engage students in the decision-making process of developing an education plan and setting goals. Plan and design lessons and choose appropriate materials for student’s interest and level. Create a positive and encouraging learning environment that acknowledges and celebrates a student’s progress. Complete and submit paperwork (attendance records, goal sheets, student progress reports) in a timely manner. Refer students to other services as needed, in consultation with the Literacy Specialist or Manager Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with the student. Stay up to date about HACC's Adult Education Program through reading emails and newsletters and participate in professional development activities of interest. Respond to emails and phone calls in a timely manner. Communicate with the Tutor Coordinator or Manager when there are questions, concerns or suggestions. All participants must be vaccinated and wear a mask while in the building.

General Description: Food Pantry Volunteer Team members work with HACC staff to receive and sort food donations and prepare food packages for distribution to clients. Volunteer team members help keep the Food Pantry well-organized and operating efficiently. Time Commitment: Must be able to keep a consistent schedule and have availability during at least one of the time slots listed below. Mondays: 12:00pm - 4:30pm Wednesdays: 8:00am - 12:30pm Fridays: 8:00am - 12:00pm* *Note: Individuals who desire to volunteer during the Friday shift need to be able to lift 50lbs as they will be unloading the truck. We also deliver food to seniors the second Tuesday of the month in the morning. Duties/Responsibilities: - Unload deliveries from Greater Chicago Area Food Depository Truck and other Pantry partners - Sort and clean fresh products - Sort, stock, and rotate food shelves - Date food products - Dispose of expired food - Reorganize food and supplies, as needed - Clean and disinfect shelves and floor - Break down cardboard boxes for weekly recycling - Prepare food bags for distribution - Assist in distribution of food to clients - Assist with paperwork, as assigned Qualifications: - Youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. - Ability to lift boxed food items (10 - 50 lbs.) - Able to work as part of a volunteer team - Flexibility and ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment - Positive attitude - Able to keep to consistent schedule Volunteers must be vaccinated and wear a mask while in the building.
