If you have a few hours a month to volunteer to help a caretaker, someone who has a loved one in hospice and they need to get out to run errands for a bit - we would love to train you as a volunteer! Often these people cannnot get out to get their groceries, or hair cut, or pick up prescriptions. They are afriad to leave their loved one alone. Being a volunteer you can sit in the home with that patient and give the caretaker a break; knowing you will alert the hospice staff if there is a need while they are out of the house. Most of the time this need is for a few hours. Most of the time you would offer a certain day/time to the caretaker and they will accommodate. Sometimes, they have appointments that cannot be changed and will ask you to come sit at that time. If you feel you might be able to do this, please join us! Our volunteers do not do patient hygiene, help patients transfer from bed to chair, or feed a patient. They are there as companions and eyes/ears to alert the hospice staff to needs while the caretaker is away. You can watch TV with the patient, play music, read a book etc.

Hospice patients often have dementia and blanket and boards with gadgets on them, buttons, knots, locks, keys, zippers, clasps etc are useful for them. Can you sew? Small lap blankets 18 inches x 18 inches are desirable. Word with wood? Boards with more heavy-duty items like locks, gears, spinners etc are also wonderful. We would work with you to find donated items to use and you would be making them for specific patients. Can you help?

We all look forward to retirement, no schedule, sleeping in, traveling etc. If you find yourself in this situation and still want to stay a bit involved in helping the community, consider volunteering with hospice. Volunteers at hospice can visit patients at facilities or in their private residences. They have conversations, read out loud, play music, play games, sit and watch the birds together, watch the Guardians or Cavalier games and more. Patients in their homes might need a volunteer to sit with them while their caregiver goes out to get groceries, or they might need help in their garden, or putting up seasonal decorations. Perhaps they want to write a letter to a far off friend but they can't hold a pen anymore. If you sew or are handy with garage projects, we need people to make fidget blankets and boards for patients with dementia. You work from home :-) If you feel the calling to sit with patients as they transition from this life to the next, you can become a Vigil volunteer with us and help a patient not feel abandoned as they pass. Many opportunites! Think about joining us!

Hospice offers volunteers to patients and their families as they journey the last stages of life together. Sometimes this is visiting patients and being a companion, other times its just sitting in the room with them so that they know they are not alone. Remember what it was like to be alone as a teenager, or recently divorced, or widowed? Just having someone there in the silence of transformation, was so precious. It's not so much 'what' we do, its just 'that' we do it. Being there, being present, being a witness to their journey... Our hospice services six counties and we try to find volunteers in each so that driving time is reduced. Can you imagine yourself sitting with someone and reading to them, playing music together, playing cards or checkers, looking at photos and telling stories, or just sitting while their family runs errands? We need you. Please contact us!

How did I get to this place so quickly? Is my life really ending? My friends and family members have already gone and now I am on the path that leads to what is beyond death myself... Can you sit with me, keep me company, distract me for a bit from my medical condition and give me comfort? My caregiver is tired and needs a break, or I am in the facility with no visitors. I could really use a friendly face to come visit me, hold my hand and bring some love to the moment. Become a hospice volunteer and make a difference. The simple act of visiting and sitting with someone is profound. Join us to help patients in the Willard area.
