FoodCommune is a freegan food co-op. We are entirely volunteer-run. It takes a tremendous amount of time and effort to handle this food and get it distributed to people: locating, picking up, unboxing, sorting, preparing, loading, transporting, storing, refrigerating/freezing, displaying, etc. the food. The biggest thing we need help with right now is PICKUPS! Especially if you have a truck or trailer, but many pickups will still fit in a regular car. What are some ways I can help? -- VOLUNTEER on Saturdays to facilitate our weekly food distributions. (see our separate listing on VolunteerMatch) -- NOTICE food being discarded, then call Pam 404.822.5685 so that she can arrange its rescue. -- RESCUE food yourself (get your hands on food that somebody is discarding), then contact us to make arrangements for us to get that rescued food from you: we can come pick up the rescued food from you, or you can bring it to us if you prefer. -- DRIVE your truck/trailer to help with food pick-ups during the week. -- ORGANIZE an "expired food drive" to gather expired food items from your neighborhood or workplace. -- DONATE supplies: recycled bags, recycled containers, takeout food containers, tote bins, bungee cords, a tarp, a gallon of bleach, etc. -- CONNECT us to organizations discarding food- reach out to your local businesses and tell them about FreeFoodCommune and how they can help reduce food waste. -- OFFER any skills you may have: grant writing, community outreach, fundraising, recruiting volunteers, clerical skills, etc.! Have food to donate? Ideally, bring it to Edgewood Church on Saturdays between 10:00-12:00 so that we can just give it out that day. 1560 Memorial Drive SE, Atlanta, GA 30317 If you are unable to come on Saturdays, then you can drop off pantry items on either one of these two covered porches 24/7: 1) 1118 Forrest Blvd. Decatur GA 30030 2) 466 Waldo Street SE Atlanta 30312 Often we need volunteers to do pickups from homes and businesses when they are unable to drop off the food. For donations of cold foods, you call 404.822.5685 to schedule an appointment for pick-up, or a volunteer will pick the items up for you. Those items will go straight into our Mooler (mobile cooler).

We need help all day on Saturdays, from 10:00-7:00. You can pick a shift, 10:00-1:00, 1:00-4:00, or 4:00-7:00. (You are certainly welcome to volunteer for longer if you choose!) If you want to take food home with you that day, please help yourself. Volunteers can take proportionate to their time worked: two items per hour. :) Saturday Schedule: 10:00-1:00: set up room, bring out food, sort/clean/organize food 1:00-5:30: food distribution time! Attendees come through and shop. 5:30-7:00: packing up, cleaning up For your first time as a volunteer, it is best to come for the first shift so you can see how everything is set up, but if that doesn't work for you then any time is good :)
