Assisteo Hospice's Volunteer Program, where we make friends and create smiles. Do you have a certified pet therapy dog and enjoy spending time with the elderly? Has your 'therapy animal’ been through a nationally recognized pet therapy certification program? Or are you interested in seeing if you and your pet would qualify as a therapy animal (it's not that difficult)? Note: A therapy dog provides socialization, encouragement and joy during short, organized visits. This is very different from being an emotional support dog or service dog, which are long-term, person specific assigned animals. What do our Pet Therapy teams do? Assisteo's Pet therapy teams typically visit our patients 1-2 hours per month, for about an hour. Often visits are to skilled nursing facilities and assisted living facilities (group homes). Pet Therapy dogs have a unique way of changing the atmosphere in a room, putting smiles on faces and bring immense joy to our patients and staff. What qualifies an animal for Pet Therapy? The most common dog therapy breeds the Labrador and Golden Retriever due to temperament. However, a dog that is calm, friendly, enjoys being around people and non-aggressive around other dogs/animals, could make for a great therapy animal. Pet Therapy teams (pet & handler) are required to be evaluated, and certified through a national pet therapy organization, like Pet Partners or Pet Therapy Dogs International. Insurance and vaccinations are also required for the animals. NOTE: Pet Partners provides the needed insurance as part of their certification dues, which costs about $200 for handler onboarding/training, team evaluation and first two years of registration (including insurance). Many of our dearly loved hospice patients would love visits from your furry friend. Studies have shown that spending time with animals can Lower blood pressure Help people feel emotionally safe Increase happiness and joy Decrease depression & anxiety Provide comfort If this is of interest to you, joining our Pet Therapy Team could be for you. Pet Therapy Teams provide much needed emotional and practical support to meet the non-medical needs of patients and their families - friendship, support, encouragement, socialization, and companionship... making friends and creating smiles, as we like to say . You as the handler would also receive hospice patient volunteer training to help make the most of your visits. Not only do our patient care volunteers make a tremendous difference in the lives of our patients, but our volunteers receive so much as well from the time spent with their patients. One thing that is special about Assisteo Hospice is that we are a Veteran preferred hospice, receiving many of our patients directly from the VA Hospital. In fact, over half of our patients are U.S. Military Veterans. Our main admin office is in Phoenix, but we provide patient care for most of Maricopa County. If this sounds of interest to you, I'd like to work out a day/time to connect on the phone to start. I can answer questions, share more details, talk about our on-boarding process, etc. Thank you for considering being a part of the Assisteo Hospice team. Assisteo Hospice Volunteer Program - making friends & creating smiles Are you a military Veteran looking to encourage other Veterans? Brian Hetzer here, Volunteer Coordinator for Assisteo Hospice, a preferred Veteran’s hospice in the greater Phoenix area. I am a Veteran myself (USN 1985-1991). I’ve seen the impact one Veteran can make in another Veteran’s life. Many of our Veteran patients spend much of their days alone and could really use a friend. You could be that friend. We will train you to make the most of your visits, which are typically 1-2x/week, one hour each. Hospice provides vital care for people on their 'end of life' journey, and this is done best by using a team of people to help meet the needs of our patients. Doctors, nurses, aids, social workers, chaplains, admin support and volunteers all play a key role in providing quality care. Not only do our patient care volunteers make a tremendous difference in the lives of our patients, but our volunteers receive so much as well from the time spent with their patients. Our Veterans to Veterans Suppor t team consists of military Veterans who want to provide encouragement for another Veteran on their 'end of life' journey. There's a special connection that happens when Veterans connect with other Veterans. What does that look like? We call these 'socialization and companionship' visits: sharing stories playing games doing activities talking about life, family, etc. You are doing much more than just visiting, you are creating opportunities for another Veteran to feel loved and appreciated. Assisteo Hospice is a Veteran preferred hospice, receiving many of our patients directly from the VA Hospital. In fact, over half of our patients are U.S. Military Veterans. We love the opportunity to not only provide great care for all our patients, including our Veterans, but also to honor those who served in a special way through a variety of different Veteran support programs we provide to patients and their families. If helping us serve those who have served sounds of interest to you, I'd like to work out a day/time to connect on the phone to start. I can answer questions, share more details, talk about our on-boarding process, etc. Thank you for considering being a vital part of the Assisteo Hospice team. Assisteo Hospice's Volunteer Program, where we make friends and create smiles. Do you play a musical instrument? Maybe the guitar, banjo, piano, or harp? Are you caring, compassionate and enjoy spending time with seniors? Being a Patient Care Volunteer with Assisteo Hospice could be for you. Patient Care Volunteers provide much needed emotional and socialization support to meet the non-medical needs of patients and their families - friendship, support, encouragement, socialization, and companionship... making friends and creating smiles, as we like to say . Many of our patients greatly enjoy listening to music, even more so, having people come to play live for them. Music is known to connect with parts of the brain like nothing else does. Music can be played either bedside, one on one with patients, or in a larger group setting. Some proven benefits of music therapy for seniors include: Helps to process thoughts Rekindles positive memories Relieves boredom Reduces stress Improves speech skills Encourages happy thoughts Motivates movements Increases social interaction Our music volunteers are part of our patient care volunteer team and receive training to help make the most of the visits (in addition to playing music). Not only do our patient care volunteers make a tremendous difference in the lives of our patients, but our volunteers receive so much as well from the time spent with patients.
