This position is a work camper position - Volunteers MUST bring their own RV or Travel Trailer AND be able to commit from mid-May through mid-October in exchange for a campsite with hookups. (couples encouraged to apply) Roving Caretaker - 1 campsite available Volunteers commit to 3 days/week from mid-May to mid-Oct in exchange for a full hookup campsite at Russell Pond Volunteer Village. Volunteers work an approximately 8-hour shift patrolling either the South Route or North Route of the Pemi (Pemigewasset) Ranger District. They are focused on maintaining stocked facilities by replacing toilet paper, cleaning toilets, picking up litter and emptying garbage receptacles. These positions must have a valid driver’s license and comfort level with operating a Forest Service vehicle. Hosts are requested to be available for public interaction most of the day and expected to make full rounds early in the morning and evening. Hosts are not expected to contact visitors after daylight hours or to participate in law enforcement activities. Working weekends will be required due to the increase in visitor use. Duties Include but are not limited to: -Open and close park entrance gates, usually 8am-8pm or dusk. -Host at day use sites must be able to use personal vehicle to manage gates on site and have a good driving record. A mileage reimbursement is provided for task related to the upkeep and maintenance of the day use area. -Oversight of day use area that includes daily checking and cleaning and stocking vault toilets if needed. -Manage visitor use and advising of rules and regulations -Maintain daily logs and mileage expense reports in a timely manner. -Trash maintenance -Talk to visitors and answering questions -Provide information about recreation opportunities of the forest -Educate visitors on fire safety, Leave No Trace/Tread Lightly principles, and bear food storage requirements -Report any damages, issues, or concerns to district staff as well as Forest Service LEO’s if needed. -Travel to the districts other host site maybe required to facilitate the opening and closing of gates during adjacent hosts scheduled days off, mileage will be reimbursed for travel to adjacent host site. Training and a district orientation will be provided. A federal background check will be conducted upon award of the position. If couples wish to volunteer an application must be completed for EACH person. The volunteer must always present a neat, professional appearance and wear appropriate uniform components, which will be provided at no cost. Volunteer must have their own self-contained RV/Fifth Wheel or travel trailer as there are limited hookups. The Thompson Park host site does have a sewer holding tank and propane can be provided by the district. Water will need to be hauled to the site, transportation tanks, pumps, and potable water is available at the Butte District ranger office (7 miles from the host site). Electricity is not provided at this site however the district can provide gasoline for generators. The Thompson Park is nine miles south of Butte on Highway 2, is a municipal recreation area with 25 miles of non-motorized trails for hiking, horseback riding or mountain biking. Position is NOT required or permitted to collect fees from the visitors. Join us in the spectacular Wallowa Mountains of northeast Oregon as a Wilderness Ranger Intern/Volunteer! Over 350,000 acres and 500 miles of trails in the Eagle Cap Wilderness provide a variety of landscapes and routes from moderate, low-elevation day hikes to alpine scrambles. We are recruiting a 2-4-person crew that will work independently and alongside professional USFS Wilderness Rangers. Backcountry and wilderness trips may range from day hikes to 10-day overnight hitches. Interns will primarily work from a remote base camp in the Lakes Basin Management Area. We are looking for candidates with backcountry travel and camping experience who are capable of working on a crew and in a solo capacity. Our ideal candidates are self-reliant individuals eager to share their knowledge and passion for Wilderness as well as help with light trail maintenance and rehabilitation of illegal campsites. This opportunity is available from Mid-June to Mid-September. A minimum of a 6-week commitment within this timeframe is required. Preference will be given to longer-term applicants. Shared, bunkhouse-style housing may be available, as well as reimbursement for food and incidental expenses. Some equipment and uniforms will be provided. Update individual campsites daily with incoming reservation information. Be a first person informal contact for visitors and campers; may be asked to provide roving and formal/informal interpretation to communicate developed site, agency mission. Stay in the campground and serve as a resource for visitors and campers; visit with campers and conduct inspections throughout the campground area. Assist with registering camp and trail usage plus provide information on campground rules/guidelines to help provide a safe, clean environment for all visitors (note: fees are not collected by volunteers directly from campers or hikers - this is a self-service fee area). Provide posted information, answer questions about the campground, local amenities and services, trails, area recreational opportunities and site regulations Identify issues that need to be addressed; contact FS officials to address issues. Serve as an important link between USFS law enforcement officials and the campground. Hosts only report incidents and situations that need to be addressed. Hosts do not take actions to enforce laws, regulations and policies, such as detaining or arresting suspects and endangering themselves or visitors. Monitor safety at the campground and reporting hazards to appropriate FS officials. Assist in maintaining the beauty of the site and visitor safety by ensuring that visitors know and follow rules during their visit; conduct minor maintenance and clean up. Help with other duties that may arise that benefit the visitors. Maintenance responsibilities will include: daily water testing of chlorine residual, cleaning restroom, cleaning contact station, operate mowing equipment as needed and trained, light carpentry and plumbing repairs, emptying of trash cans and recycling receptacles, transporting garbage to work center dumpster, litter pickup. May be called upon to assist with emergencies such as SAR (search-and-rescue) or evacuations due to hurricane or wildland fire; operate two-way radio equipment; report suspicious behavior and/or criminal incidents. QUALIFICATIONS Must be willing to make 6 month commitment including holidays, be able to work at least 30 hours per week, and have your own RV/trailer with a shower and bathroom. The Caribou - Targhee National Forest is seeking an individual or couple to host the Scout Mountain Campground, located just 13 miles South from Pocatello, Idaho. The site is in a shaded forest with great views of Scout Mountain and a nearby stream. The site is part of the Mink Creek recreational area and has access to many recreational opportunities such as many multi-use trails for biking, hiking and motorized use, bird watching and horseback riding. A self-guided nature trail is conveniently located for visitors to use. Scout Mountain Campground hosts 32 Single Sites, 2 Double Sites, 1 Triple Site, and 1 Group Site. Hosts will be responsible for interacting with the visiting public, providing information about rules and regulations, camp cleanup and general maintenance. A self-contained RV or travel trailer will be required from the host. The host site includes sewer hookup, potable water, storage shed, picnic table and a fire ring. Host will need to provide their own power source, if desired, as well as a vehicle that can travel on a paved road and be used to conduct campground maintenance. Hosts will recieve reimbursement for incidental expenses of $22/day and for official mileage at the rate of 0.67 per mile directly related to campground maintenance. Training will be provided to complete tasks to Forest Service maintenance and safety standards. A USFS Volunteer uniform, tools, and campground supplies will be provided. Requirements • Pass a background check and possess a valid state driver’s license. • Volunteer a minimum of 4-6 hours a day/20-30 hours weekly and be available other times for public interactions. • Hosts will be expected to work weekends and on holidays. • Volunteers need to be able to conduct light physical work in an outdoor setting such as cleaning campsites and bathrooms, replacing signs, pushing wheelbarrows/wagons and doing light vegetation management. Preferred Candidates: • Outgoing personality with strong verbal communication skills to make daily public contacts • Maintain daily written logs. • Ability to interact with diverse visitors with a positive attitude informing them of rules and regulations. Campground host volunteer positions are accepted as long as positions are vacant.
