Why foster? City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue (CDCK) was formed in 2011 to save adoptable pets in overcrowded and high-kill shelters where resources are severely limited. Many of these dogs are days or even hours from being euthanized when CDCK steps in and offers them a lifeline. Unlike a shelter facility, our rescue relies on foster homes to care for our dogs until they are adopted. By finding these dogs permanent and loving homes in the DC area, we enrich both canine and human lives. Foster parents help us learn more about a cat or dog's personality, temperament, and training level so that we can match them with the right forever home. We truly wouldn't be able to save these lives without our foster families! Commitment We request that you commit to a minimum of two weeks but prefer if you can foster until adoption. This time period varies but averages about two months. What Does a Foster Do? As a foster parent, you provide a home, food, bed and TLC. We ask that you bring your foster dog to at least two adoption events per month. We also host cat adoption events from time to time. City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue pays for all pre-approved vetting during the foster period and provides basic supplies (including a collar, harness, leash and crate for dogs). Your foster dog or kitty provides lots of love, tail wags, snuggles, and kisses! Are you convinced yet? Sign up! https://www.citydogsrescuedc.org/foster.html

Help manage medical cases for City Dogs City Kitties Rescue! Requirements: schedule flexibility to allow for vet calls or calling clinics to follow up on medical cases (this often occurs during business hours on weekdays & sometimes on weekends) ability to monitor access inbox and vetcare group chat throughout the day (both are Google products) general understanding of cat (or dog) routine medical needs & basic care (vaccines, normal behavior, daily care, etc.) ability to cover duty days (usually 4-5 days per month) - this means monitoring the inbox for new forms, responding to new forms, & triaging emergencies with the team (send vet records, talking to vet, talking with foster) throughout the morning/day/evening. Volunteer would be responsible for these duties for the entire day. ability to manage cases - return emails, follow-up with foster about how pet is doing, answer questions about treatment willingness to learn about common medical conditions that we often see/treat in-house (different causes of diarrhea & how we treat, what to do when a cat has cold symptoms, how to treat ringworm) willingness to communicate with the team constantly - we take a hive mind approach to managing medical cases so until the new volunteer feels comfortable, we wouldn't want them giving medical advice without discussing it internally with the group first. Even then, we still talk over cases...there's just so much to learn! communication of availability/unavailability - we all have full time jobs in addition to volunteering to help with vetcare. Meetings & work trips happen as well as vacations. A medical case worker would communicate in advance so that the team can offer coverage & support while someone is unavailable/away. minimum of a 10 hrs weekly commitment for at least a year (depending on case load & complexity of case, may require more time - as volunteer becomes more familiar with the routine, it may require less time. Training is time-intensive which is why we're requesting a longer volunteer commitment - we know this won't jive for everyone) good written/verbal communication skills, with attention to detail access to computer and phone with working internet (position is 100% remote) Nice to have (but not required): familiarity with cat (or dog) medical treatments or common supplements for common issues (diarrhea, intestinal parasites, allergies, URIs, etc.) or complex medical issues familiarity with nursing moms with babies (mostly related cats, we very rarely have a momma dog with pups) understanding that rescue medicine is different than personal pet ownership (while we would love to be able to pursue every single diagnostic test & treatment, we simply can't always do that as a rescue) familiarity with our rescue's mission familiarity with Microsoft Excel, Gmail, ShelterLuv, &/or Google Chat strong commitment to volunteer - dedicated volunteers make our rescue run. With the exception of a handful of people, the majority of our rescue is run by volunteers & donors who feel a strong commitment to help these animals.
