Stargate School , a K-12 charter school focusing on meeting the unique educational needs of gifted students, is seeking independent board members to serve a three-year term on the Governance Board. You will gain experience overseeing an organization with over 150 employees serving 1,600 students, managing a $20,000,000 budget, and working alongside a vibrant parent and volunteer community. Responsibilities include: Upholding the mission and vision of the school (see below) Developing and implementing a strategic plan Setting general policies to govern the school Providing oversight and management support to the school’s executive staff, specifically the Board’s two direct reports: the Executive Director of Academics and the Executive Director of Operations and Finance Monitoring the school’s financial posture by reviewing key performance indicators, financial statements, and approving the annual budget Ensuring compliance with laws and applicable regulations The Board functions optimally when composed of members with a variety of skills and backgrounds. Independent Directors play a critical role in this by bringing a unique outside perspective. The following skill sets have been valuable in the past. Marketing* Legal* Education* Finance* Organizational Leadership State Legislative Processes Human Resources The responsibilities of a board member typically require 5-10 hours per month, primarily after business hours. This time includes: Attendance at monthly board meetings (typically held on a Wednesday evening) 5-10 additional meetings each year (including work sessions, trainings, and executive sessions, all typically held on a Wednesday evening) 1-3 full day events per year, including an annual strategic planning session (Saturday), and the League of Charter Schools Conference (two weekdays, optional event) Liaison work with a committee (meeting timing dependent on committee) Attendance at occasional school functions Training for this position includes reviewing written documents, completing online modules, and meeting with board members and with executive staff.
