Stargate, a K-12 charter school focusing on meeting the unique educational needs of gifted students, is seeking independent board members to serve a three-year term. Help support a local school while gaining experience managing a 200 employee organization and a vibrant parent and volunteer community. Responsibilities include:

  • Upholding the mission and vision of the school (see below).
  • Setting general policies to govern the school.
  • Providing oversight and management support to the school’s executive staff, specifically the Board’s two direct reports: the Executive Director of Academics and the Executive Director of Operations and Finance.
  • Monitoring the school’s financial posture by reviewing key performance indicators, financial statements, and approving the annual budget.
  • Ensuring compliance with laws and applicable regulations.
  • Maintaining a positive relationship with the school’s authorizer (Adams 12 School District).

The Board functions best when made up of members with a variety of skills and backgrounds. Independent Directors play a critical role in this by bringing a unique outside perspective. The following skill sets have been valuable in the past. Those marked with asterixis are a current priority.

The responsibilities of a board member typically require 5-10 hours per month, primarily after business hours. This time includes:

  • Attendance at monthly board meetings (held on a Wednesday evening)
  • Meetings with Executive Directors (monthly afternoon meeting, rotating schedule between Board members)
  • 3-4 working sessions per year (evening meetings)
  • 1-3 full day events per year - Annual Planning (Saturday), Charter School Conference (two weekdays, optional event)
  • Liaison work with one or more committees (meeting timing dependent on committee)
  • Attendance at occasional school functions

There is a defined training program consisting of written documents, online modules, meetings with board members, and meetings with executive staff. This will require additional time initially, but effectively brings new board members up to speed. See below for a link to additional details.
