Mission Statement
Join with your fellow Nevada County citizens to improve government and save taxpayer dollars. The Grand Jury investigates operations of all county agencies, special districts, schools, and other entities that receive public money. Issues examined are chosen by jurors based on citizen initiated complaints and/or directed by the jury itself. If you care how your government works...how tax dollars are spent...and want a voice with authority, the Grand Jury may be right for you. Commitment is for one year, approx. 10-15 hours per week. Make a real difference in Nevada County!
Description
Grand juries are a vital part of the American justice system. They came to our shores with the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1635, and are part of the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution. In California, Grand Juries were codified into law in 1872.
The deliberations of the Grand Jury are conducted in utmost secrecy and jurors are sworn to maintain confidentiality for life. Each jury reports annually on significant investigations and issues recommendations to resolve government deficiencies.
