Join the Nevada County Grand Jury and influence how your government runs -- and how tax dollars are spent.
The Grand Jury fields citizen complaints and investigates the operations of county agencies, schools, special districts, police, jails and more. Each jury reports annually on significant investigations and issues recommendations to resolve noted deficiencies.
Grand jurors serve on a 19-person panel for a 12-month term. Meetings are currently 'virtual' via Zoom, (During non-Covid operations, jurors may meet at the Rood Center in Nevada City.) With all meetings currently held via Zoom, its the perfect chance for Nevada county residents (such as Truckee, North San Juan etc.) to influence county government without traveling to Nevada City.
Grand Jury deliberations are conducted in utmost secrecy, and jurors are sworn to maintain confidentiality.
Jurors can anticipate volunteering 10-15 hrs per week in meetings, research, follow-up, report writing etc.
Jurors receive a small stipend for each meeting, as well as reimbursement for travel expenses.

Join with your fellow Nevada County citizens to improve government and save taxpayer dollars. The Grand Jury investigates operations of all county agencies, special districts, schools, and other entities that receive public money. Issues examined are chosen by jurors based on citizen initiated complaints and/or directed by the jury itself. If you care how your government works...how tax dollars are spent...and want a voice with authority, the Grand Jury may be right for you. Commitment is for one year, approx. 10-15 hours per week. Make a real difference in Nevada County!
Grand juries are a vital part of the American justice system. They came to our shores with the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1635, and are part of the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution. In California, Grand Juries were codified into law in 1872.
The deliberations of the Grand Jury are conducted in utmost secrecy and jurors are sworn to maintain confidentiality for life. Each jury reports annually on significant investigations and issues recommendations to resolve government deficiencies.
We'll work with your schedule.
