Our Vacation Relief Homes care for our pups when our raisers need relief. Most Vacation Relief volunteers care for a pup for us occasionally - once every month, every other month, for 3-10 days depending on the need from our raisers. We ask that you keep our pup safe and happy. There is no cost to you - the raiser brings all supplies the pup will need, including a crate if needed, and will drop the pup off and pick the pup up. We expect you to keep the pup safe and happy while in your care, and respect our policies - the dog is not allowed on the furniture, the dog will not be off leash except in a fenced area, the dog will not be fed from the table, and the dog will not be taken to a busy, stressful setting. Looking for a volunteer opportunity that's rewarding, fun, and where you'll truly make a difference? If you live in Putnam, Westchester, or Dutchess County, Western Connecticut from Brookfield to Ridgefield/Redding or the Stamford area, or Upper NYC (Manhattan), we want you!!! The pup will live in your home. You'll love, care for it, teach it basic obedience and house manners, and gently socialize it to new situations. All under the careful supervision and guidance from our trainers. You'll make a significant contribution to helping someone less fortunate. We can't produce our service dogs without their being raised in the loving homes of our volunteer raisers. It's that simple. No raisers, no service dogs. Our service dogs are free to their recipients - people with physical disabilities other than blindness. We train carefully selected mixed breed pups we adopt from rescue groups. It's a rare dog that's capable of being a service dog. If you have no more than 1 dog at home, who is friendly to other dogs, we want you! If you work from home, or can bring the pup to work, or have a partner to stay with the pup when you're working, we want you! Our pups can't be left alone more than 3 hours at the most to learn to bond very closely with people. A service dog's loving bond to their recipient motivates them to assist that person. Choose whether you want to raise one of our pups for 6, 12, or 18 months. We cover all the major costs of the pup - vet care, food, crate(s), leash(s), harness(es), and some toys. You provide bowls, measuring cup, some toys, and dog bed(s) when they're ready for them, and transportation costs to socialize the pup, take it to the vet as needed, attend classes(when held) and events (1 or 2/year). You'll learn a LOT about dogs from our trainers, will get out and exercise more, will meet new people, add a purpose to your life. We seek 2 additional Board Members who will be active in supporting our organization - through their expertise, volunteering, donating, and being great ambassadors to the community to promote our organization and cause. We seek people who are passionate about dogs, are well connected socially, and who will contribute in concrete ways to Putnam Service Dogs. The Board meets every 2-3 months, some virtual meetings, and some dinner meetings. Generally meetings held 5:30-7pm or 6-7:30pm, and set on a date that is convenient to all members of the Board. Dinner meetings are generally held in Brewster. Putnam Service Dogs is a 501(c)3, BBB Acredited, and 2023 Platinum Guidestar nonprofit. We provide free service dogs to people with physical disabilities. Our dogs are mixed breeds, carefully chosen from rescues. We were founded in 2016. Our CEO/Founder is in the process of purchasing a building which we will occupy the ground floor of the 2 floor building. The backyard will be fenced, and it will be our first Residential Training Center. A full time caretaker will be hired, and we will house up to 4 dogs there. We'll move into a larger, more prominent position in our community with this Residential Training Center. The building is a mixed use building in Brewster, 2453 Route 6. Town approval for this use was approved. We'll have a sign visible from Route 6 in front of the building, and a physical presence. Before this building, our dogs lived at our Head Trainer's house while they were in Formal Training (the last part of their training). This center will allow us to quadruple our production of service dogs from 2 a year to 8. We will begin a fundraising campaign to raise the funds for Putnam Service Dogs to purchase the builidng at cost from our CEO - $700,000. Our CEO expects to close on the purchase of this building by mid-August. With the building permit processes, and renovations, we expect we'll start using the building by the end of September or early October.
