Do you like meeting new people? Are you passionate about promoting veganism? Come represent Northwest VEG all around Portland and the surrounding area at farmer's markets, fairs, film screenings, etc! Talk to the community about Northwest VEG's upcoming events, answer questions about transitioning to a plant-based diet, direct people to appropriate resources, and let the community know how welcoming we are. No experience doing outreach? Don't worry, we will train you and partner you with someone!

Volunteers should: have a positive and kind personality, be good with people and comfortable talking to strangers, have a mode of transportation that makes it easy to transport all tabling supplies to and from the event, have the ability to set up a folding table and 10x10 canopy if needed, and have an idea of what "veganism through an intersectional lens" means.

Northwest VEG's mission is to educate and encourage people to make vegan choices for a healthy, sustainable, and compassionate world. Outreach to people new to the idea of plant-based eating and compassionate lifestyle choices is essential for us to move our mission forward. Outreach Volunteers are foundational to our organization!

As an Outreach Volunteer, you will be encouraged to examine your choices and beliefs in regards to compassionate living and to deepen your understanding of the issues we are facing. You will be trained to address a wide variety of questions that may arise while you are doing outreach and representing Northwest VEG, and emerge feeling stronger and more confident in your ability to discuss veganism with a wide variety of people.

Outreach locations vary depending on the season. In the spring and summer we often table outside at local farmer's markets on the weekends, which means somewhat early mornings. Regardless of time of year, evening outreach opportunities are fairly rare.

While representing Northwest VEG you will be expected to dress in a casual, semi-professional manner.

Mission Statement

The mission of NW VEG is to educate and empower people to make vegetarian choices for a healthy, sustainable, and compassionate world.

Description

More and more people are choosing vegetarian foods for a variety of reasons. Going veg is not about deprivation, it's about celebration. It's a very powerful choice to respect your body, the earth and other beings. Every veg meal is a vote for compassion, for healthy, nutritious food, for clean air and water, biodiverse habitats and sustainable farming practices. There are lots of reasons to choose to eat veg! Everybody has a different one!

The Northwest Vegetarian Education & Empowerment Group is a non-profit 501(c)(3) group in the Portland (OR)-Vancouver (WA) area. Founded in 2003, we are dedicated to bringing awareness to the power of a veg lifestyle and helping support people in their transition toward making healthier, more sustainable & compassionate food choices. We welcome everyone, vegetarian or not, and encourage you to explore veg issues at your own pace. Our purpose is to:

  • Build, support & maintain community in a fun environment
  • Build, connect & network in the larger community
  • Provide education & outreach
  • Be a responsible, effective, transparent organization
  • Provide expertise & serve as a resource to the community on veg issues
  • Create positive change & make the world a better place
