Project Literacy is an initiative of TrueNorth Community Services to provide free, flexible, and confidential one-on-one tutoring and English as a Second Language (ESL) services to adults in Newaygo County in order to eliminate adult illiteracy in the area, which in turn, empowers families and strengthens the community. Tutors meet with learners in a public location once a week for 1-2 hours. Bilingual, Spanish-speaking tutors are strongly encouraged to apply, however it is not required for tutors to be bilingual.
Tutor Training will provide information for new tutors on the characteristics of adult learners, strategies and techniques for tutoring adults, and how to overcome any obstacles that may arise. All materials provided are free and new tutors must attend both evenings to be fully trained. Tutors are then matched with an adult learner based on availability and location. Tutors must commit to at least 1 year of tutoring weekly for 1-2 hours.
To register for tutor training or to learn more about the program, please contact Lisa Daniell at 231.924.0641 ext. 110 or ldaniell@truenorthservices.org.
