For Individuals:
Orientation is required for individuals . The first step is attending a 30 minute group volunteer orientation. Volunteer orientation consists of a tour of our facilities and receiving your FOOD Share name badge.

Group activities: Group volunteers do not go through volunteer orientation. These are the group activities we offer:

Here is the breakdown regarding the rescue food sorting team building activity:

  • Volunteers will check expiration dates, quality of packing, boxing and weighing food items getting it ready for our agency distribution.
  • We can accommodate 6 to15 volunteers at a time. The minimum amount of people is 6 the maximum is 15.
  • Minimum age requirement is 12 years of age or older. For groups of youth aged 12-17 years of age we need 1 adult per every 4 youth.
  • The duration is one and a half or two hours depending on the date selected.
  • Attire: Closed toed shoes are a must! Layered casual clothing. Anyone wearing flip flops or other inappropriate shoes will not be able to participate.
  • All participants must be able to walk, bend and lift boxes of product weighing up to 35 lbs without assistance.
  • All volunteers are required to sign-up on-line via a link your group leader will provide to you.
  • Check in with the volunteer coordinator, Christina Forino, in the lobby of the 4156 building asking for the Volunteer Department.

Scheduling information:

See attached open group schedule January 2019 thru June 2019 for available food sorting shifts. Bookings are on a first come, first serve basis. If you see a date you think works with your availability tell us to tentatively book it for you. Once we determine a date and shift time a link will be provided for you to send to anyone interested in joining the sort date. If you are unable to recruit the minimum of 6 people we suggest you let your group invite family/friends to join your group (as long as everyone is 12 years of age or older). If you do not reach the minimum of 6 we will need to reschedule.

Senior Nutrition Garden

We also partner with the Area Agency on Aging Program Gardener, Bob, to help him find volunteers to work with him in his garden. Depending on time of volunteering the garden tasks include (but not limited too) hand weeding, weeding with garden tools, harvesting vegetables, planting seeds, installing irrigation, and helping to with other garden project (ex: building garden boxes, putting up meshing). Be aware you may encounter gophers, snakes, and fire ants since you are working out in nature.

Requirements:

Able to do physical labor in changing outdoor weather conditions

Should enjoy working out of doors.

Minimum age is 16

Mondays and Thursdays 8:00am-Noon

For groups: 10-12 people accepted. Over 25 with enough notice it will work out, just let me know.

Once we determine a date and shift time a link will be provided for you to send to anyone interested in joining the garden date.

Cleaning of Warehouses maintaining a food-safe environment:
Cleaning under pallets, Cleaning under conveyer belt, Consolidate food pallet racks (when needed), Dump rotten foods, Clean white bins, Cleaning out of reach areas close to ceiling of warehouse, Cleaning racks by hand in both warehouses, Cleaning of warehouse floors (sweeping & mopping), Cleaning the cooler and freezer: Cleaning racks in cooler & Cleaning out spoiled foods from cooler.

Last Thursday of each month

9:00am-Noon (or anytime between this time shift)

If you see a date you think works with your availability tell us to tentatively book it for you. Once we determine a date and shift time a link will be provided for you to send to anyone interested in joining the cleaning date.

Sign-ups and checking in and checking out:

The group coordinator will be marked as a leader so they will be able to receive all sign-ups and/or cancellations from anyone in your group. Once we determine a date and shift time a link will be provided for you to send to anyone interested in joining the sort date.

When you all arrive: come in at least 5 minutes early so we can sign everyone in on our computer or if they have a smart phone they can sign themselves in using their phone. The location service has to be on in order to sign in via their phone. There is also a link in the confirmation email allowing them to sign up via the mobile phone. The confirmation email goes out two days prior and then if they check the text box next to their cell phone # in their profile they will receive a text reminder one day prior to event date.

Parking Information:

Carpooling greatly encouraged! Free public parking. Please do not park in front of the Channel Islands Roofing building. Park in any open spaces directly in front of FOOD Share or on the sides or back of the 4156 FOOD Share building. You can drive across Lambert and park on the South side of Southbank Road or park on Lambert and walk to the FOOD Share building.

Additional information:

For groups of 15-30 maximum: You do not go through a volunteer orientation. Please confirm if your group is larger than 15 people. In order to accommodate up to a maximum of 30 people we will need to plan other activities and find staff to cover the additional volunteers. All activities are based upon produce availability.
