Event Description: Help plant/and or harvest farm fresh produce to the hungry in Ventura County. Be one of the first grassroot volunteers in our community to plant produce starters to grow romaine lettuce, iceberg lettuce, cabbage, and cauliflower for our pilot produce program. Each week we plant Tuesday through Thursday (and Friday if needed) and repeat the planting of seedlings for the next four weeks. We would like to have 10 volunteers per day for planting. The week of July 16th we will be harvesting everything and getting 15-20 volunteers per day would be great. We will likely go into September and will know more once we get it all planted. If you can't bend, you can stand and make holes for the planters. This is not an activity for those who have knee or back issues. Shifts: 8am-10am and 9:45am-Noon. Feel free to stay all four hours if you would like to. Attire: Comfortable, layer casual clothing such as shorts and long pants, long sleeves, and a sweatshirt. Wear a hat, sunglasses and gloves (borrow ours if needed). Wear sunscreen. Bring a refillable water bottle. I like having my water pack on me for quick sips of H2O. Please keep hydrated even though you think you are not thirsty, you are! Light snacks and water provided. Portable toilets and handwashing station on-site. How to book a group volunteer opportunity with Food Share. All our activities are dependent on inventory of product, staff availability, number of people in your group, space availability, and dates and times you are requesting. No more than thirty people at one time. If your group is larger than 15 people, we will need to split your group into different activities. We will try our very best to accommodate your group to the best of our abilities since the food must go out! All activities get food out to those suffering from food insecurity. Send an email to our Volunteer Department volunteer@foodshare.com answering these questions: How many people are in your group? What date are you requesting? Please provide a couple dates. Tuesday and Thursday mornings are not available. What shift time do you want? morning, afternoon, night? Provide a couple shift times. Tuesday and Thursday mornings are not available. Any limitations or challenges we need to know about? Our greatest group needs are for these activities.
