ORGANIZATION: Power to Read

  • 55 people are interested

  • Volunteers are trained to offer reading support to children in grades 2 - 5.
  • Each volunteer is matched with a student and meets with that student one hour a week during the school day (9:00 - 3:15).
  • Tutoring runs from October through June 1st, and follows the public school schedule of vacations.
  • Tutoring is done in a classroom.
  • A Power to Read staff member is available at all times to offer support and provide instructional materials.

Mission Statement

Support the classroom teachers in strengthening the reading skills of needy 1st - 5th graders of Silver Lane Elementary School, East Hartford, CT.

Description

  • Each volunteer tutor is matched with a child from grades 1 - 5
  • Volunteeers are trained and commit to a weekly, 1 hour, tutoring session
  • Tutoring occurs from October - May, during the school day (9:30 - 3:00). Lab follows school calendar.
  • Tutoring is done in the Power to Read room - a spacious, sunlit classroom.
  • Power to Read staff is always present to provide instructional materials and support to the tutors.
