The 2018 hurricane season has been extraordinarily active in parts of the U.S., with Hurricane Florence currently impacting millions in the Carolinas. As this natural disaster unfolds, the staff here at VolunteerMatch is doing its part to ensure that, if you are in an affected community, you are prepared and safe. And if you are looking to help with disaster relief efforts, you know about the most effective ways to contribute.
Volunteer tutors offer individualized support to adult learners at our center in Lake City. They develop lesson plans focused on individual students' needs at all skill levels, promoting students' self-sufficiency and working with them towards greater independence. Instruction can focus on any of the following skill areas: literacy (reading and writing), conversation skills (speaking and listening), and computer literacy.
Experience working with adult immigrants and/or refugees is a plus, although not required. The top 5 first languages represented among our students are Amharic, Tigrinya, Spanish, Mandarin, and Somali, although combined our students speak over 40 languages. We are an equal opportunity employer working towards a culturally diverse workplace. People of color and bilingual/multilingual individuals are encouraged to apply.
