ORGANIZATION: Talbot Special Riders

  • 14 people are interested

The volunteer horse sidewalker(s) main concern is for the safety of the physically and/or mentally challenged rider. Secondarily they help the rider focus attention on the instructor and help challenge the rider to perform to the best of his/her abilities.
Before a volunteer can work as a sidewalker he/she must:
1.Observe experienced sidewalkers during a riding session
2.Attend at least one orientation session
3.Initially work with an experienced sidewalker

You do not need any knowledge of horses or disabled persons.

Each session lasts from 3-10 weeks (10 week sessions in spring and fall and shorter session in the summer and winter).
Sessions are held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings and Tuesday afternoons. Possibility of other days and times including weekends in the future. Help is needed for any of these sessions.

Please call Nancy Radosta, Volunteer Coordinator, at 410-604-2290.

Mission Statement

PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE - special individuals receiving a very specialized therapy to help them develop physically, emotionally, mentally and socially.

Description

Talbot Special Riders (TSR) was organized in 1981 to provide therapeutic horseback riding to mentally and physically challenged individuals. Our curriculum is adjusted to the individual needs/requirements and/or capabilities of our clients, both children and adults. Our goal is not to turn out great equestrians, but to build confidence, self esteem, a sense of accomplishment, increase attention span and develop the ability to take, understand and follow directions. We work on coordination and spatial relationships, as well as stretching and strengthening exercises. Thus individuals can better realize their potential and find a place in our society in which to lead a productive life.
TSR is accredited by Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) to insure accepted and safe techniques in the implementation of the therapy. The TSR instructor is also certified by PATH.
No knowledge of horses is necessary to volunteer, just a caring heart and the desire to work with others.
We emphasize abilities, not disabilities!
