BARCC's biggest and busiest volunteer programs, our phone, webchat and Incarcerated Survivor Support hotlines receive over 5,000 calls per year that are primarily answered by volunteers like you. Volunteers provide crisis counseling over the telephone for survivors and their significant others. They also provide resources and referrals to callers.

Requirements and Details:

  • Completion of a 40-hour Rape Crisis Counselor training and a "buddy" shift after graduation from training (see www.barcc.org for updated training schedule).
  • Attend mandatory Peer Supervision 2x per month
  • Have access to a landline or a cell phone for use during your shift.
  • You must have a quiet, confidential location in which to take calls during your shift (you do not have to come into the BARCC offices during your shift; calls may be taken remotely.)
  • The Hotline is currently seeking volunteers of all genders

Mission Statement

The mission of the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC) is to end sexual violence through healing and social change.

Description

Founded in 1973, BARCC is a community-based, grassroots organization offering free, confidential, comprehensive rape crisis services to survivors and their families. These services include a 24-hour hotline, 24-hour medical advocacy, counseling services, legal advocacy, and case management, as well as proactive community awareness and prevention services through partnerships and trainings with organizations and communities. BARCC is the only rape crisis center in the greater Boston area, and is committed to supporting all survivors of sexual violence and to changing attitudes in society which contribute to sexual violence.
