Position: Painesdale Mine and Shaft Heritage Site Clean-Up
Location: Painesdale, MI
Organized in 1889, the Champion #4 Shaft-Rock house is the oldest shaft-rock house standing in the Keweenaw. During the 1930s, the mine extended belowground up to 4,800 feet from the surface on the incline at the #4 shaft house. Today, the shaft house and the grounds around it are the location of the Painesdale Mine and Shaft Heritage Site - the most recent addition to the park’s long list of Heritage Sites around the Keweenaw.
Maintaining a clean and well-preserved cultural landscape is an on-going task that requires continual monitoring and upkeep. Volunteers will work side-by-side with site and park staff to improve visibility and access to the industrial landscape and to clear brush and vegetation that can lead to damage of historic buildings and structures.
The work will occur from 8 am- 11 am on June 15th, 2024, at 42634 2nd St, Painesdale, MI 49955 at the Painesdale Mine and Shaft. All volunteers will receive a free tour of the upper floors of the Champion #4 shaft house.
Duties:
Use hand tools to cut and clear vegetation and plant growth around buildings, rail tracks, and other historic landscapes as directed by site organizers.
Pick-up modern-day trash for disposal.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
Ability to discern historic litter from modern-day trash.
Ability to use a variety of hand tools including, but not limited to hoop brushes, loppers, bow saws, and hand saws.
Physical Demands: Standing, walking, bending and may be required during outdoors on uneven services in a variety of weather conditions. Lifting of moderately heavy objects and using a variety of hand tools (shears, loppers, hand saws, etc.) may be necessary.
Minimum Age: 16 years
Minimum Time Requirement: 1-2 hours
Anticipated work schedule: Work schedule is flexible, 2-4 hours.
Work Environment: Most of work is outside where temperatures can vary widely, from the 60’s to 80’s in the summer to -15 in the winter. Volunteers should be prepared according to the weather report.
