Junior Ranger Station Volunteers

Flexible Schedule | Mesa Verde National Park, CO 81330

Number of positions available : 1 - 2 (two if applying as a couple) Work schedule : 5 days per week, 6-7 hours per day, 10:30 am to 4:30 pm. Weekend work is required. Uniform : Volunteer-in-the-Parks uniform will be provided: Shirt, hat, name tag and outerwear. Volunteer must provide brown or khaki slacks or shorts, and their own footwear. Training : On-site and shadow. Informational and instructional material will be sent in advance. Housing : One RV site with full hook-ups is provided inside the park at Morefield Campground. Volunteer must provide their own RV. Note that Morefield Campground is located 15 miles from the Chapin Mesa Historic District, where the Junior Ranger Station is located. Volunteer must have a vehicle to drive to the station every day. Duties: Volunteer staffs the Mesa Verde Junior Ranger Station. They spend quality time with prospective Junior Rangers, reviewing their activity booklets and swearing them in as Junior Rangers. Junior Ranger Station volunteers provide a fun learning experience for children while connecting them to their national park. Each day, the volunteer opens & closes the station, stocks materials (booklets, badges, pencils, etc.) records statistics, and cleans the station area and courtyard as needed. Additional Duties : · Volunteers manage and maintain several child-friendly exhibits and hands-on activities. · Volunteers may also prepare and present informal programs for children and families, such as table talks, demonstrations and roving interpretation. · Volunteers may occasionally assist with staffing the information desk in the museum. · Volunteers may assist with a variety of other tasks, such as roving interpretation, office tasks and special projects. Additional Requirements : · Must wear the Volunteer uniform. · Must work well independently and as part of a team. · Must be able to multitask and prioritize tasks during busy periods at the station. Skills Desired : Volunteers must be able to communicate effectively and enjoy working with children of all ages (and their families), patiently answering repetitive questions, providing information, and reviewing lots of Junior Ranger booklets. Volunteers should be able to adjust to times of heavy visitor contact as well as periods when things may be slow. Work Environment: - The Junior Ranger Station is located outdoors in the historic district of Chapin Mesa at an elevation of 7,000 feet. - Physical Demands : While a shade canopy and chairs are available, the volunteer may be required to stand for long periods of time to assist visitors. The volunteer should be able to lift 50 pounds. - Potential Discomforts : Work is performed outdoors under a variety of conditions that include temperature/weather extremes, exposure to insects, pollen and dust. There is a canopy for shade, but you will be required to move in and out of the canopy frequently. Mount Rainier Curatorial Collection Assistant 2024

2-3 positions are being filled at Mount Rainier National Park. Housing for is available, or mileage reimbursement for those who live local but would be commuting at least 50 miles each way. An additional position is available in Seattle, which does not include housing. Duties: 1) entering the metadata for the digitized historic photographs as well as converting tiffs to jpegs so that they can be uploaded to NPGallery--they need it searchable without the excel spreadsheets, so the metadata needs to be part of the image file. 2) Curatorial work at the park including conducting the annual museum property inventory, cataloging history artifacts and natural history specimens, and processing archives, and other curatorial projects. 3) Digitizing the herbarium. I have a UW Museology student already signed up for this project but she could use assistance. The project is at the UW herbarium and involves photographing the park’s vascular plant collection which will be uploaded to the PNWConsortium webpage for scientist around the globe to search and study. If time allows, our non-vascular plants will also be digitized. This position is at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. No housing is available. Housing for curatorial volunteers at Mount Rainier may include a trailer pad, shared house, or a shared apartment. Location: The park's curation facility at Park Headquarters near Ashford; one position, as described above, is at the University of Washington. Carpenter Shop Volunteer FY24

Volunteers serving in this position help support public programming at the Carpenter Shop in the reconstructed Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) fort. These volunteers tell the story of the shop, the HBC’s personnel, and the important role these individuals played in the expansion of Euro-American industry in the Pacific Northwest, as well as in related industries such as coopage and wheelwrighting. All volunteers are expected to become familiar with relevant historical information and to develop effective and educational presentations for the visiting public. Telling the story of the Carpenter Shop to the visitor is the number one priority for our volunteers. Carpentry skills are secondary to this primary purpose and are used to enhance the story being told. The primary goal of a carpentry volunteer’s work is to help visitors understand the people and function of the fort's shop, its connection to the Hudson's Bay Company's Fort Vancouver, and the role the shop played within the greater Columbia Department of the Hudson’s Bay Company. A secondary role of the Shop is to provide period-correct woodwork for the fort on an as-needed basis. Work is performed under the direction and supervision of NPS staff. Fort Vancouver NHS is only open Tuesday through Saturday. Volunteers serving in this position must be available for two shifts per week, at least three hours per shift.
