Please visit the new page to apply.
As a volunteer at the Hudson River Special Management Area known as Buttermilk & Bear Slides, you will have the opportunity to explore the trails, enjoy breathtaking views of the Hudson River, and scenery while volunteering.
Volunteers can help with many projects, including walking the trails, picking up garbage from the fire pits, parking lots, campsites, and near vegetation. Volunteers will be provided with supplies such as orange bags, trash pickers, and gloves. Volunteers can also assist the volunteer steward, James Sullivan, with painting and planting trees.
Volunteers can work independently by showing up at any time to pick up litter or connect with other volunteers to work in groups.
Volunteers must complete a DEC Volunteer form to ensure they are protected by state workers' compensation. It is important for volunteers to stay in touch with the Morgan Duke Conservation Society and inform the volunteer steward of any issues or trail conditions.

Mission Statement
The Morgan Duke Conservation Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting forests and water bodies from threats, such as people walking off the trails and damaging vegetation and impacts of throwing litter on the trails, hiding litter in the vegetation. Our team works tirelessly to educate the public on the importance of proper waste disposal to prevent wildlife habitat damage and harming wildlife like threatening species and preserve natural habitats for wildlife. From Orange County to Putnam County to Ulster County and other areas, our volunteer's hike through forested areas, Wildlife Management Areas, and waterways to clean up litter, report damaged vegetation, assess trail conditions, and even plant trees to restore destroyed habitats. We collaborate with state and local conservation agencies to develop and implement innovative solutions that safeguard these precious natural areas and the wildlife that call them home.
