ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

The city of Flagstaff was designated the first International Dark-Sky city in 2001. The Flagstaff National Monuments were designated International Dark-Sky Parks in 2016. An International Dark Sky Park (IDSP) is a land possessing an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and a nocturnal environment, and that is specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, and/or cultural heritage resources, and/or for public enjoyment.

The Astronomy Volunteer operates their privately owned telescope and provides informal interpretation of what is seen in the telescope and/or what is seen with the naked eye for the benefit of park visitors attending the Sunset Crater Volcano Star Party. Use of personal telescope equipment during volunteer hours (day or night) is required due to lack of available government resources. Volunteer hours include nightly setup and takedown.

This volunteer opportunity is to aid the Flagstaff Area National Monuments’ Star Party operations. The volunteers are expected to act in a professional manner representing the National Park Service (NPS) by working to uphold its mission. Participants are not required to wear NPS volunteer uniforms.

Job Responsibilities:

· Assist with sun scope and solar activities during the day-time event at SUCR

· Give a presentation on astronomy to the public during the Star Party

· Help set up safety cones and presentation materials

· Clean up using Star Party supplies

· Setting up or taking down personal or NPS telescopes

· Allow the general public to view objects through the volunteer’s personal telescopes and engage visitors in a friendly manner

· Provide telescope and/or astronomy information to the general public at a level they are comfortable with.
