Multnomah County Library seeks creative teen volunteers to assist with the Rockwood Library makerspace. The makerspace aims to inspire teens to make - using your hands, provided tools, and imaginations! Teen Maker volunteers will test new maker activities with other teens inside the makerspace. Volunteers will also have the chance to help shape the space by providing valuable feedback and ideas.

BIPOC community members and those fluent in languages other than English are encouraged to apply.

Location: Rockwood Library, 17917 SE Stark Street, Portland, OR 97233

Time commitment: Two to four shifts per month. We ask volunteers for a commitment to participate for 6 months. Scheduling is flexible; most shifts are after school hours and on weekends, with some evenings in the future.

Responsibilities

  • Welcome teens to Teen Drop In, help them sign in and get started in the space
  • Mentor other teens on how to make, build and create
  • Other tasks could include: preparing and organizing makerspace supplies, making fliers, collecting statistics, data entry, making reminder calls to volunteers or people signed up for maker classes
  • Train users on safety rules and equipment use

  • Comfortable and excited about trying new creative things
  • Enthusiastic about working with others
  • Enjoy talking with people and providing information
  • Enjoy working with computers
  • Ability to follow directions and makerspace rules
  • Ability to work and talk effectively with people from different cultures
  • Reliable and ability to travel to Rockwood for agreed upon scheduled shifts
  • 14-18 years of age with some exceptions made for 12 and 13 year olds

Training & Other Requirements

  • Meeting and overview of makerspace with Makerspace staff
  • Previous attendance in makerspace programs including Drop In and workshops
  • Attend specific makerspace training, some of the training may be online
  • Site orientation and review of volunteer program policies and procedures
