Background

CHERP Inc. is a startup that has created the country’s first nonprofit solar module microfactory, called CHERP Solar Works , in Pomona, CA. It is also partnering with other nonprofits to replicate the model in economically and environmentally disadvantaged communities across the country. These nonprofit operators donate a portion of Net Income from module sales to finance microgrids and vouchers that offset low-income residents’ electricity bills.

CHERP Inc. is also helping to create a California Benefits Corporation to assist all microfactory operators to organize and facilitate financing for microfactory buildout and operating reserves.

Volunteer Projects

CHERP Inc. is seeking a project-based volunteer, with significant experience in either Human Resources or Operations, or both, to manage and complete one or both of these projects:

Employee Handbook:

  1. Review several different employee handbooks, which CHERP Inc. has collected, as resources for developing CHERP Inc.’s own handbook
  2. Based on these, draft an employee handbook that reflects compliance with California state regulations.

Systems and Processes:

  1. Help CHERP Inc. to develop appropriate systems and processes for checks and balances related to decision making and financials. This would include:
    1. Interviewing our bookkeeping and accounting team to understand where there might be process gaps
    2. Identifying appropriate ways to address the gaps
    3. Guiding the team in implementing new sytems and processes.

Benefits to Intern

The intern(s) who fills this role will:

  1. Have the opportunity to work with a unique and cutting edge renewable energy startup
  2. Build additional references in their areas of expertise
  3. Establish a powerful network within the for profit and nonprofit sectors.

Volunteer Requirements

Our intern(s) must:

  1. Have significant experience in either Human Resources or Operations, or both
  2. Be able to work independently as well as collaboratively with others
  3. Have a commitment to thoroughness and accuracy
  4. Be comfortable working remotely
  5. Have a passion for CHERP Inc.’s mission

Ideally, the intern who works on the Employee Handbook project will have knowledge of human resources and employee handbook policies in both the for profit and nonprofit sectors.

About CHERP INC

Location:

112 HARVARD AVE 344, CLAREMONT, CA 91711, US

Mission Statement

Our vision is American communities with access to reliable, affordable renewable energy, living-wage career pathways and vibrant economies. Our mission's four pillars are: reduce global warming; create living wage jobs; stimulate local economies; and promote equity and justice. We accomplish our mission by helping to launch dozens of solar microfactories, run by nonprofits in America’s disinvested communities. Each one: produces 100,000 solar modules and reduces 27,000 tons of CO2 annually; creates 70 training and job opportunities for people with workforce barriers; drives economic development in the local community; and reduces low-income families’ energy bills via microfactory sponsored community solar projects.

Description

CHERP, Inc. is a startup, and has created CHERP Solar Works, the first nonprofit solar module factory in the world, in Pomona California. It is also developing a network of nonprofit, solar microfactories in economically disadvantaged cities across LA County and the country.

The city of Pomona and CHERP Solar Works are partnering to use renewable energy as a tool for creating hyper-local, sustainable, economic expansion. Together, they will produce the world’s most advanced solar module while also serving as a workforce development engine that creates dozens of direct jobs and catalyzes hundreds of indirect ones.

CHERP Solar Works is also partnering with local solar installers to build solar systems for Pomona’s municipal, school district, commercial and residential buildings. It will then reinvest the earned profits in community solar projects, in conjunction with the local CCA, to provide free energy for the lowest income families. This provides an additional, substantial boost to the local economy as those families spend their energy savings in the local economy instead of sending them out of the city to the utilities.
