ORGANIZATION: Translation Commons

Description

Build and expand the keyboard development community through collaboration and partnering with keyboard developer groups (e.g. CLDR, Keyman, as well as mobile, laptop and desktop device manufacturers). Encourage communities to be involved in, and eventually take over, the development and implementation of their own language keyboards and related digitization work. Provide them with the relevant training and support so they may become more self-sufficient and train their own members.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Build keyboard layouts for desktop, web, tablet and phone. Optimize your keyboards for each platform, including touch-and-hold keys and alternative layers.

  • Work with community leaders and technical activists to define project goals.

  • Create, design, implement and test keyboards. Write documentation for keyboards.

  • Follow existing processes for delivering keyboards. Propose new tasks and processes to adapt to new needs.

  • Engage with the keyboard requester community to help test the output and provide feedback on design, layout and utility.

Secondary Responsibilities
  • Create multipurpose, reusable tech training materials (e.g. video, docs, workshops, case studies, FAQ) as well as Train the Trainer materials.

  • Identify, recommend, or create keyboard design and dev tools.

  • Coach/train/supervise other developers in developing keyboards.

  • Look for ways to make keyboard development scalable to many communities, through training, support, and tools.

Skills/Experience
  • Knowledge of Keyman Developer or similar tools preferred, but will train.

  • Some basic knowledge of writing systems (e.g. Arabic, Cyrillic, Devanagari, Latin, among others).

  • Experience with Github or similar repositories.

  • The belief that digitally disadvantaged languages (DDL) should have access to digital information and their language supported by the most available devices, browsers, operating systems, and mobile applications.

Time Commitment
  • Flexible

Mission Statement

We believe in the Power of a Language to... - Sustain languages by bringing them online - Create opportunities and give back - Share knowledge through free resources - Bring together a vibrant community of volunteers

Description

Translation Commons is a non-profit community of language lovers, professionals and technologists. We provide a roadmap and create resources for a digital ecosystem where all languages have equal access and speakers can pursue educational, cultural and economic opportunities.

We are partners to the International Year of Indigenous Languages, a UNESCO initiative, and are creating resources for the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, 2022-2032, making language rights a reality for all people! Our Language Digitization Initiative is enabling many languages to get their script online and partake to digital opportunities.

Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our community.
Their passion for language and their expertise in technology are the cornerstones of all our initiatives. Our activities are centered around career paths that volunteers can engage, experience and practice. Our platform offers over 40 free language related tools. Our courses and resources include a variety of language topics, all created by our volunteers.

As part of our support towards Pandemic, Crisis, Emergency & Safety ; our Covid-19 poster-maker is translated in over 350 languages and for the majority of these communities, our poster has been the only Covid-19 information available in their language. Our volunteers also offer their help to other organizations responding to any ongoing Covid-19 crisis.
