A committed coaching team is needed to support Onyx (Boys/Girls ages 12 to 21) - the fledgling Drumline of SoulPhamm. Auditions for this team will begin virtually in September and then their season will run from September 14, 2024 to June 21, 2025.
The Drumline often attracts young people who are at the very start of their musical careers - having little to no experience in drumming. Occasionally, we also attract students who have experience with other instruments who want to learn the collegiate drumline style. Coaches will have the autonomy to influence the team's style, adding Jersey and NYC flavor to their routines.
In-Person Practice will be on Saturdays from 1pm to 4pm in downtown Newark, NJ. The coach can shorten the in-person practice time as desired. The new coach can also elect to teach virtually on Saturdays (during the same time frame preferably, or slightly earlier) until such time as the ensemble needs to meet to prepare for events. We also have one coach who will work virtually with the team during the week, complimenting what the coach will teach on Saturdays.
The team is expected to include between five and ten young people and is expected to be fairly busy starting in the spring of 2025 - often being invited to perform in high visibility events such as NBA games and parades, so coaches should come in with the mindset of preparing the team for immediate performance.
Experience in a drumline is required. Coaching experience is not required but the ability to guide a beginner or experienced musician is critical. We will support you as you grow. There are also opportunities for referral to paid opportunities after six months of service.

Our vision is to promote virtue, equity, unity, justice, faith, charity and a sense of common purpose and brotherhood among all people with an emphasis on the development and advancement of young people through education, athletics, service and the arts.
SoulPhamm was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in the state of New Jersey on June 25, 2021 and is the "birth-child" of Coach Luis ("Lou") and Dr. Leisa Herrera ("Mz. Doc"). The organization exists to provide training to young people in a variety of sports and performing arts and unique opportunities to display those talents through competition and performance. By integrating mentoring, life skills, opportunities for community service and academic enrichment to the athletic/artistic program, we help make our scholar-athletes as well-rounded as possible, capable of meeting and overcoming any challenges they are faced with. Although Coach Lou passed away suddenly in January 2021, the official launch of SoulPhamm was held on June 26, 2021, which coincided with his birthday weekend. SoulPhamm will recognize its own founding, as well as the achievements of our young people every year on the fourth Saturday of June, as a tribute to the life and legacy of Coach Lou.
