The Ruey Classic is an annual basketball game which celebrates the life of co-Founder Luis Herrera, who passed away suddenly in 2021 and the anniversary of the nonprofit he helped begin - SoulPhamm. You may learn more about SoulPhamm at www.soulphamm.org. This year's Ruey Classic will be held in downtown Newark (YMCA) on Saturday, June 24th from 12pm to 5pm. There will be approximately 100 people in attendance. The event raises funds for program operations for the upcoming season. We are hoping to attract a volunteer who can "DJ" for this event. There will be a basketball game, as well as a few performances and we are looking for someone who can help keep audience engagement and entertainment in between all of the acts. The event starts at 1pm, but the DJ can arrive to set up/sound check at 12pm if needed. Interested candidates should reach out with questions (and to receive more information). Many thanks for your interest!

This opportunity is primarily for Junior High School and High School Students. SoulPhamm is a nonprofit organization that provides unique competitive and performance opportunities in sports, the performing arts and community service. To learn more about us, please visit our website at www.soulphamm.org. Sometimes, when we create a new program, we struggle with getting young people to register - mainly because we are a new organization, and no one has ever heard of us. Ambassadors help us by actually joining the team, training with the coaches and then representing SoulPhamm at high visibility performances and events. Once we establish a reputation for being a solid performing and competitive team, we tend to attract more interest from young people. Color Guard is a combination of the use of flags, sabers, mock rifles, and other equipment, as well as dance and other interpretive movement to inspire organizational pride and team spirit. As with most of our programs, we anticipate that the color guard will include boys & girls ages 12 to 25 (with the 19-25 age group being a performance group only). Two ambassadors are needed to help us start this team. The team will fundraise to cover the cost of Ambassador costumes, travel and competition fees so there will be nothing for you to pay "out of pocket". SPECIFICS: The team does not exist yet. The purpose of this role is to help us build out the program and then lead it from August 2023 to June 2024. As of now, the team will practice on Saturdays from 1pm to 4pm at the Newark YMCA. We will begin registering for the color guard throughout June. The team will take a break in July and return to start training in August. The team's first major event would be in October. Competition season would start in March 2023. Interested candidates should share a little about their color guard experience when they reach out. Candidates with experience in contemporary dance (who don't have specific color guard experience) are welcomed to apply. You can bring your parent/guardian to meet with the Director on any Saturday in June (between 1pm and 4pm) to fill out paperwork OR you can set up time to meet with her via Zoom (and paperwork can be sent to you via email). No phone calls please.

Virtual Opportunity
SoulPhamm is a nonprofit organization that provides sports, arts, education and service programs to young people in New York and New Jersey. You may learn more about us by visiting our website at www.soulphamm.org. SoulPhamm serves young people ages 9 to 25 in a variety of programs including: hip-hop majorette dance (which utilizes hip-hop, contemporary, jazz genres), step team (which also utilizes hip-hop dance), stomp & shake/traditional cheerleading (which also utilizes contemporary dance styles). This year, we are adding Bollywood/Bhangra, Color Guard, and Salsa to our menu and are looking to develop hip-hop choreography for our drumline and sorority. Our program runs from September to June and then breaks over the summer to give the kids and opportunity to rest and recharge, but like most "academic" programs, we are concerned about "summer learning loss". We are now looking to add "virtual faculty" to our artistic team who will be responsible for developing and videotaping choreography in their desired genre that we will have the kids learn while they are on break. This helps keep them engaged and gives them a toolbox of choreography that they can begin to execute when we return for training at the end of August. Volunteers would select the team(s) they would like to support, develop choreography and then record themselves teaching the choreography. All of our teams have an online "meeting space" through the BAND app where we post videos. We would post the videos for them to learn while they are on break. In August, we will begin to hold virtual practices where they can show us what they have learned (virtual faculty are welcomed, but not required, to lead or sit in on these). Our regular coaches have access to BAND and will also learn the choreography so by the time they begin the new season, all the coaches will need to do is "tighten up" the routines to get the kids ready for performances and competitions. Our virtual sessions would begin in July - so ideally, we would like to "onboard faculty" before June 24th, which is the end of our current season. You should have videos prepared for us to post by then. You can continue to create and record videos throughout the new season if you'd like. We would post videos of the kids practicing and performing your routines so that you can see their progress. Candidates local to Newark, NJ are always welcomed to attend and facilitate a practice in person. The next step for interested candidates is to have a very informal meet and greet with our Director via Zoom to answer any questions. We would ask for headshots (or selfies) and a short bio of each of our artists, as we would add them to our website as "Virtual Faculty Members". Please let us know which team(s) you would be interested in when you reach out. No phone calls please.

A talented and creative individual is needed to design a graphic / cartoon image for the 2023 Ruey Classic, a memorial basketball game which honors the life and memory of SoulPhamm’s Co-Founder, Coach Luis Herrera who passed away suddenly in 2021. For more information on SoulPhamm, please visit our website at www.soulphamm.org. Coach Lou (and his widow Mz. Doc) love to showcase the talents and skills of not only young people, but community members as well. To see the work of previous artists, please visit our website (and check out the Ruey Classic Tab). The strongest candidate will be able to show us samples of their previous work and should be able to "turn around" the finished product by June 19th, to enable us to showcase the work. We have received one amazing graphic and are excited to spotlight others. In addition to using the product for the artist’s personal portfolio, we would be pleased to serve as a professional reference for as long as the artist needs (and to write references, etc.). Thank you for your interest! No phone calls please.

This year, we are adding Bollywood/Bhangra, Color Guard, and Salsa to our menu and are looking to develop hip-hop choreography for our drumline and sorority. We also have a co-ed basketball program beginning this fall. Our program runs from September to June and then breaks over the summer to give the kids and opportunity to rest and recharge, but like most "academic" programs, we are concerned about "summer learning loss". Participation in all of these activities requires a certain level of stamina and flexibility that many of our young people do not have. Over the summer, many of them will be less active and likely more engaged with their phones than with movement. We cannot completely solve this but are resurrecting a project that worked very well for us during the pandemic. We are now looking to add "virtual fitness faculty" to our artistic team who will be responsible for developing and videotaping stretch and fitness routines designed to help the kids establish/maintain flexibility, upper body strength, and stamina. This helps keep them engaged and gives them a toolbox of workouts that they will continue to execute when we return for training at the end of August. You can design a training program that is specifically for boys, specifically for girls or one that supports both. You would videotape yourself doing whatever the workout is and we will then post that for the kids to access and work on in the summer. You can also elect to do a "live" Zoom workout with the kids on a day and time that works for you (evenings work best for our kids). Our virtual sessions would begin in July - so ideally, we would like to "onboard fitness faculty" before June 24th, which is the end of our current season. You should have videos prepared for us to post by then. You can continue to create and record videos throughout the new season if you'd like.
