ORGANIZATION: USDA Forest Service

Location: Cave Run Lake Office, Cumberland District, Daniel Boone National Forest

Time Range: We are seeking a volunteer to help us out on weekdays throughout the rest of the year, not mandatory to commit to entire season.

Schedule: Preferably 3-5 days (M-F) in 4-8 hour shifts (between 8AM-4:30)

Volunteers will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Answering visitor questions through use of reference materials, personal knowledge, staff referrals, basic internet searches, and other resources.
  • Providing visitors with approved handouts and resources, as needed and requested.
  • Maintaining adequate levels of brochures and handouts available to visitors.
  • Assisting with pass/map sales when necessary.
  • Notifying staff of Ranger Station visitors and other issues as they arise in the Visitor Center or with visitors themselves.
  • General office duties (filing, scanning, etc.)

Skills Required:

  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain a positive and professional attitude.
  • Ability to answer visitor questions and assist with visitor needs.
  • Ability to maintain respect and composure within stressful circumstances.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently with little or no direct supervision.
  • Ability to practice safety within the job.

Training: Volunteers will receive onboarding training and will shadow other frontliners before being expected to contribute fully during a scheduled shift.

Level of Physical Activity Required: Low - The work requires minimal physical effort. Tasks include standing, walking, reaching, bending, and occasional light carrying.
