DESCRIPTION

The park is in need of volunteers to help on a trail improvement project along the historic Old Guides' Trail, which leads from the Lodge parking area down to the Historic Entrance of Mammoth Cave. The project will focus on improving drainage and removing debris, with the ultimate goal of reducing trail erosion.

Volunteers will meet outside the Visitor Centerat 8:00 a.m. CENTRAL TIME for check-in and safety briefing. The event will last until approximately 1:00 p.m. CT.

Volunteers should bring snacks, water bottle, and a lunch, and wear long pants and close-toed shoes.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS

While the Old Guides' Trail is short (about 0.1 miles), it is relatively steep. Participants in this event should expect to encounter uneven terrain, loose rocks/gravel, and possibly slick areas.

Broken glass and other sharp debris may also be encountered along the trail and in drainage areas. Other potential hazards of outdoor work include stinging insects, ticks, mosquitoes, snakes, poison ivy, trip and fall hazards, weather hazards, overuse injuries, overexertion, and heat-related illness. Some heavy lifting of branches and rocks--with or without assistance--may be required to complete this project.
